When should waterproofing be done?

New shoes, bags or clothes as well should receive a basic waterproofing before they are even worn: 3 not too wet spray applications at a spraying distance of at least 20 cm. This protects from dirt and moisture penetration. After wearing them 8 – 10 times they should be waterproofed again because the protection wears down due to mechanical stresses.

In what order should waterproofing sprays and treatment creams be used?
For better penetration the leather is first protected with a waterproofing spray. After it dries the leather is fed nutrients and moisture through a treatment cream in order to keep it soft and supple. The order changes only when you use our Nano-products. In order to achieve optimal effectiveness, first use a treatment cream and only then apply the Collonil Nanopro waterproofing spray.

Which products can be used for shoes with High-Tex-Membranes?

These days High-Tex-Membranes are processed in combination with different upper materials and can be found between the upper layer and the lining layer. They are wind and waterproof as well as breathable. To maintain these characteristics you should only use products that have a “HIGH-TEX“ label – for example, Collonil Nanopro Spray, Waterstop Spray, Special Wax Spray, Rustical Spray, Leather Proof, Nano Complete, Waterstop Tube or Nubuk+Textile.Wax paste (in a tin) and oil products (for example Collonil Outdoor Biwax and Outdoor Sport Wax), on the other hand, are not suitable.

Which products are recommended for rubber boots?
We recommend our Collonil Leather Soap.

What is the best way to stretch shoes?
To stretch pinching areas in leather shoes we recommend our stretching foam – Collonil Stretch. This foam is applied inside the shoe and as directly as possible onto the tight area. The shoe should then be worn immediately so that the leather can stretch and adjust to the foot. To prevent the shoe from returning to its original shape when it is not being worn, use a shoe form after wearing.

How are snow and water lines removed?
Water lines, swelling and white snow lines can be washed away and removed with our Collonil Shampoo.

How are fat stains removed?
Fatty stains like oil, butter or the remains of shoe creams can be removed with our Collonil Cleanser Spray. Spray onto the stain and, depending on the type of material, rub down or brush out repeatedly while still moist.

How is candle wax removed?
Scratch off excess using a bluntbject (for example, the back of a knife), apply blotting paper and dissolve using an iron (setting: wool). Then treat with Collonil Cleanser Spray if needed.

How can pen marks be removed?
For suede, stick adhesive film onto the mark, press on it firmly and rub over it. Then pull off the film and rub the rest out with our Collonil Cleaner. Removing it from smooth leather is very difficult. If it is still very fresh and hasn’t set yet, it can be removed with alcoholic solvents. However, the colour coat can be damaged hereby, so be very careful when applying. Old pen marks cannot be removed.

Can Collonil Outdoor Biwax and Outdoor Sportwax be used on shoes with functional membranes?

No. Both products contain concentrated oils that penetrate deep into the leather. After numerous applications excess can deposit on the membrane, which leads to a reduction of breathability.

What is the difference between these two products?
Both products are recommended for intensive care of tough smooth leather and/or sports leather as well as oil nubuk. It has an additional water-repelling effect. For this purpose Collonil Outdoor Biwax contains fish oil. Collonil Outdoor Sportwax contains natural waxes and oils and is perfumed. It is available in the colours neutral, brown and black.

Which products are specifically recommended for cleansing and treatment?
The Collonil Car Care Series products clean and treat smooth furniture leather as well as leather furnishings in the car sector. The series contains a cleanser for cleaning and a lotion for treating. Both products preserve the characteristics of this special leather. It does not become shiny or slippery.
Furniture made from suede can be dry cleaned regularly with our Collonil Veloursboy. We do not recommend the use of a liquid cleanser or foam because these don’t guarantee an even distribution of the product.

How can changes in colour be evened out?
No product can be recommended for large area colour improvements of leather furniture. In this case you should contact a leather dye specialist.
For small areas that have lost their colour, Collonil Silicon Polish can be used in the respective shade. The cream is applied sparingly and evenly. Allow to dry and then polish well so that as little colour as possible rubs off.
