Coloured shoes quickly lose their lustre without proper care. It’s especially frustrating if you’re dealing with an expensive pair. But note: It’s not necessary for coloured shoes to fade. Caring for colourful shoes isn’t complicated. Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most important questions around the topic.
How do I find the correct colour of shoe cream for my coloured leather shoes?
It can be difficult to perfectly match the tone of a shoe cream or polish to your shoes. This is even true for classic colours such as brown. There is no need to fret if you can’t find a 100% match, however. Simply chose a tone that is one shade lighter than the colour of your shoe.
The lighter shoe polish won’t lighten the tone of your shoes; the pigmentation in the cream isn’t strong enough for that. However, a darker tone will eventually darken the leather over time.
The same principle applies to shoe wax.
How do I take care of shoes with a colour gradient?
Some shoe enthusiasts purposefully use darker shoe creams to create an antique finish. Using a range of different colour tones, they can imitate the look of high-quality, aged leather shoes.
To do this, begin by giving the shoe a thorough wash with CLEAN + CARE . Then, apply a lightly-toned cream that matches the leather to the whole of your shoe. Next, apply a cream or polish with a slightly darker tone to select places (the toe, for example).
Seeing as you already coated the entire shoe with the lighter cream, the leather on the toe or other parts won’t absorb as much of the darker pigment. Thus, the darker tone leaves a subtler trace. The final step is to apply a bit of black polish to any parts of the shoe you desire a particularly strong gradient. Once you’ve polished your shoes with the 1909 FINE POLISHING BRUSH , you can touch-up the gradient with the two darker tones.
What should I do if I use the wrong coloured shoe polish?
Are you worried that you’ve ruined your smooth leather shoes by repeatedly using the wrong polish? Take a deep breath. Pigmentation caused by coloured creams is reversible.
You’ve probably learned this yourself whilst applying polish at some point. If a tone is too dark, you can simply wipe away any moist polish with a clean towel. If the cream has already dried, remove it with the REINIGER spray.
Intensive leather cleaning products such as CLEANING CREME also remove old shoe polish. After cleaning, apply the appropriate shoe cream and your shoe will be looking sharp once again.
How do I care for multi-coloured shoes?
Do your shoes feature various different colours or mixed materials? If so, proceed cautiously when it comes to colour care. Tape off or cover individual segments and apply one colour after the other to the respective parts.
If you’re dealing with a mix of materials, be sure to select the proper product for each material. Smooth leather, fabric and rougher leathers each require different colour care products.
How do I waterproof coloured shoes?
Waterproofing coloured shoes is highly recommended to prevent the colours from fading or getting damaged. WATERSTOP CLASSIC not only waterproofs leather shoes, but it also protects them from getting faded from exposure to UV rays.
NUBUK & VELOURS spray is the optimal choice for protecting suede and nubuck shoes. Be sure to cover the surface beneath your shoes when applying the spray as it is a much less targeted application process when compared to a cream or polish.
How do I refresh colours?
If you’re looking to refresh the colour of your smooth leather shoes, you have a large product range to choose from. For fine leather shoes, look no further than 1909 CRÈME DE LUXE . The high-gloss cream in a jar nourishes your shoes with natural waxes and oils.
If you’re in a hurry, the WATERSTOP COLOURS line is a great option. With the convenient foam applicator, the polish is easily applied to smooth leather or other high-tech materials. An added bonus: This cream is also waterproof.
If your shoes are fairly worn with deep scratches and scuffs, COLORIT works to repair and replenish the colour. The repair cream also works on on non-dyed-through-leather thanks to its high percentage of colour pigmentation.
Shoe aficionados with an extra colourful shoe collection can’t avoid the SHOE CREAM series. Featuring over 40 different colour tones, this series will certainly contain a polish suitable for your shoe.
Shoes made of suede, nubuck or fabric are well serviced by the NUBUK & TEXTILE product.
Whilst the COLOUR FASHION spray doesn’t impart a colour of its own, it gives a boost to the colours already present on your shoes. Plus, it protects mixed materials from dirt and moisture.
It would seem that taking care of your coloured shoes isn’t so complicated after all. There’s now nothing left standing between you and a colourful shoe collection finding its way into your closet. May you enjoy many years with your coloured shoes!

A coffee spill on your leather seat, greasy fingerprints on the dashboard: Sometimes these incidents are unavoidable, but even normal everyday activities place serious demands on leather car seats and interiors over time. It’s important to clean the inside of your car regularly if you want to keep it looking good for years to come. After all, a thorough clean helps protect it from wear and tear.
How do you clean car upholstery and leather car seats?
Car interiors require an effective, yet gentle clean. Surface-level stains and spills can usually be taken care of with a dry cleaning. Try the SOFT GUM to erase dirt and marks from smooth leather. CLEANER works well on suede and nubuck surfaces. Make sure to brush rougher leather interiors with a VELOURS-BOY after cleaning.
If you’re dealing with more stubborn dirt, try the LEATHER & TEXTILE CLEANER . It gets rid of hard-to-clean stains without discolouring the material. The cleaner works well on seats made of fine smooth leather as well as perforated leather and alcantara, both of which are common automotive interior materials. Mixed textile fabrics can likewise be easily treated with this cleaner.
Spray the LEATHER & TEXTILE CLEANER on the car upholstery. Make sure to brush suede, nubuck and textile seats with a CLEANING BRUSH before wiping the cleaner and dirt away with a damp towel.
If you ever get motor oil or other grease on the seats, try using the REINIGER spray. Be sure to only apply a thin layer to surfaces in a well-ventilated car.
What about coloured leather seats?
Take care when using coloured polish on leather seats. It’s not recommended to apply coloured polish to large areas as you run the risk of getting polish on your clothes.
At most, you should only apply coloured polish to very small blemishes. WATERSTOP COLOURS works well for smooth leather. It’s important to give the area a thorough buff afterwards to minimise any colour transfer. Since you cannot buff suede and nubuck, we do not recommend using coloured products on these materials.
LEATHER LOTION is better suited for use on large surfaces. It not only nourishes the leather with valuable oils, but it also refreshes colours and spares your clothing from discolouration.
Should you waterproof car seats?
Waterproofing sprays are generally not recommend for use indoors. Plus, waterproofing your car seats is not really necessary since they aren’t exposed to harsh weather conditions. Regularly treating surfaces with the products listed above is generally enough protection for your car’s leather seats.
More than just the seats – clean the whole interior
The rest of your car’s interior can be cleaned using the COCKPIT SPRAY . Apply this cleaner to any components made of plastic, wood or metal with a soft cloth. It prevents electrostatic charge, dust and protects surfaces from dirt. It also has a subtle cedar odour, leaving your car smelling fresh.
Next time you set out to wash your car, spend a few more minutes on the interior. Giving it a little extra attention pays off because well-cared-for leather seats are resistant to stains and look like new much longer.

Runners don’t really need much gear for their sport. A good pair of running shoes is usually enough and, of course, knowing how to clean and care for them inside and out.

Most runners follow up a good run with a healthy meal, refreshing shower and rest. The most important gear – the running shoes – typically get abandoned in the hall. There are a few simple tricks that help keep running shoes both hygenic and in good shape, longer.
How to put running shoes on and take them off properly
When you’re racing, speed is king, but when you’re putting on your trainers, it’s better to take a little extra time. If you don’t loosen the laces, or if you depress the heel cap, you will damage the shoe over time.
Stepping on the back of your shoe to help your foot slip out also causes unnecessary damage to the material. It is a much better idea to loosen the laces and use a shoehorn.
Always let your shoes dry out
Many runners don’t realise that each foot can produce up to a cup of sweat per day when you’re working hard. Therefore, it’s important to give running shoes at least 24 hours rest to dry out between runs. Even casual runners, who only run short distances each week, would be wise to have a second pair of trainers.
Giving your shoes enough time to dry prevents bacteria and fungi from accumulating in your runners. It will also lengthen the life of your shoes. It is best to dry your running shoes in a well-ventilated room. Avoid intense heat sources such as radiators or direct sunlight. Too much heat can cause leather to become brittle and colours to fade. Other materials, such as textiles and synthetics, also benefit from slowly drying out.
To get the best results, loosen the laces, pull the tongue forward and remove the insoles, if possible, so they can dry separately. Crumpled newspaper is also brilliant for removing excess moisture from inside shoes.
Have a second pair
Wearing damp shoes doesn’t only make them smell poorly quicker, it can also be unhealthy for your feet. Bacteria present in damp shoes can cause skin irritation and infections. Thus, it’s a good idea to let your favourite pair of running shoes dry completely and reach for a back-up pair instead.
A rest period is also important for the shoe’s recovery after a run. The shoe takes a lot between the weight of the runner and the impact of the foot on the pavement, trail or track. Having a second pair of trainers is also good for the sport: Wearing different shoe models trains different muscles and helps ensure your foot doesn’t get too accustomed to one shoe.
Clean running shoes regularly
The best thing you can do to help keep your trainers clean is to waterproof them. This doesn’t only prevent rain from getting in, but also makes sure dirt and dust don’t find their way deep into the shoe materials.
Waterproof new running shoes two to three times before your first wear and refresh the coat after every five to eight uses – more often if the weather is poor.
To make sure mud doesn’t get too caked on, brush your shoes with a CLEANING BRUSH after running in the woods or during a rainstorm. We recommend the softer CLEANING BRUSH for sensitive materials such as mesh or textile. A dry cleaning with the NUBUK BOX usually suffices for smaller spots on suede or nubuck. The SOFT GUM is perfect for use with textiles or smooth leather.
Between dust, mud and sweat, you demand a lot of your trainers, which necessitates regular wet cleaning. Clean sole edges with a CLEANING BRUSH and CLEANING SCREME after use.
CLEAN & CARE foam removes even the deepest dirt from all types of shoe uppers and simultaneously nourishes the materials.
Keep your shoe interior hygienic
Cleaning the inside of your shoe is especially important for sport shoes. INSIDE FRESH & CLEAN spray intensively cleans shoe interiors and provides a pleasant fresh feeling. Clean removable insoles separately. Brush them off in a wash basin using a mix of water and SNEAKER WASH and let them dry naturally.
Can you put running shoes in the washing machine?
Shoes with leather components should never be put in the washing machine. The leather will get warped and dry. You should likewise take caution with thermoplastic materials. Purely textile shoes can be cleaned using a washing machine so long as the manufacturer’s washing instructions don’t say otherwise. SNEAKER WASH is a washing detergent that is specially designed for washing trainers. Place your running shoes in a net bag and wash them at 30°C using the lowest spin cycle.
Proper care will lengthen the life of your running shoes
Many runners think they can just sit by and watch their shoes take the abuse caused by intense training, but there is a good reason why you should take care of your shoe uppers.
Repeated stress can cause materials, especially leather, to dry out over time. Textiles will eventually fade and become more sensitive. BAMBOO LOTION nourishes materials with natural extracts and provides them with the moisture they require. The lotion also provides a gentle clean between deeper cleans.
It’s not necessary to give your running shoes an intensive clean after each wear. Keep the exteriors clean by regularly brushing them, and avoid unpleasant odours inside with BREEZE shoe deodorant. BREEZE doesn’t just cover up odours, it neutralises odour-causing molecules. It is also great for freshening up training clothes and your gym bag between washes.
Taking care of your running shoes isn’t purely an aesthetic endeavour, clean shoes are more hygienic and have a longer life. Treat your shoes to the proper care, and they won’t leave you in the lurch on the track.

Sneakers are still trending, but cleaning them can be a bit bewildering with all the different models and materials available these days. Here’s an overview of sneaker cleaning tips and tricks.

At times, cleaning runners can seem more complex than caring for leather shoes. This is in large part due to the diversity of colours, shapes and materials found on sneakers. But there is no need to worry, each individual step is easy to follow and effective – as long as you use the right products, of course.
First Level Protection: Waterproofing
All new runners should be waterproofed prior to being worn on the street. Applying two or three even coats of CARBON PROTECTING SPRAY will not only protect your shoes from moisture, but also prevent dirt from soaking deep into the various materials. Waterproofing also makes all subsequent cleaning much easier.
Clean Your Sneaker Soles

Soles typically pick up the most dirt and grime. Here, it’s best to begin with a dry clean. Remove any dry mud with a coarse CLEANING BRUSH. Get rid of any discolourations on the soles with the SOFT GUM cleaning rubber.
For a more in-depth clean, apply MIDSOLE CLEANER to the soles with an CLEANING BRUSH or POLISHING CLOTH . Let the cleaner sit before removing it – along with the dirt – with the brush or cloth. Afterwards, wipe the surface clean with a moist towel or cloth.
Cleaning the Upper

If your shoes are really dirty, there is no avoiding a wet clean. CARBON CLEANING FOAM is a gentle, yet highly-effective cleaner that is suitable for use with all materials.
If you are using it on smooth leather, the foam can be applied directly to the surface. However, if you are using it on suede, fabric or mesh, spray the CARBON CLEANING FOAM onto a brush first and apply it to the shoe in a smooth, even circular motion. Let it sit before wiping it off with a damp cloth.
Stubborn oil or grease stains can be removed with our REINIGER spray.
Waterproof Sneakers = Clean Sneakers
Once your shoes are clean and dry (and before you reach for any polish, etc.), give your runners a fresh coat of CARBON PROTECTING SPRAY waterproofing treatment.
Spray a light, even coat on the shoe outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Make sure you don’t soak the surface. Allow your sneakers to dry at room temperature and repeat as needed.
Leather Sneaker Care
Once clean, your sneakers will likely require some TLC, especially if you want to keep leather sneakers supple. CARBON LEATHER CARE provides both smooth and rough leathers with necessary nutrients. The product will not adversely affect textile portions of the shoe.
These days, you can find sneakers in just about any colour; the brighter, the better. SHOE CREAM is perfect for smooth leather sneakers and is available in over 40 different colours.
We’ve developed SNEAKER WHITE specially for white smooth leather runners. This liquid care product nourishes the leather and refreshes the white tone.

Get the suede, nubuck and textile portions of your sneakers shining with NUBUK & TEXTILE .
Use the NUBUK BOX afterwards to ensure rough leather fibres don’t stick together.
Cleaning Sneaker Interiors and Laces
Whilst sneakers are generally lighter than leather shoes, sweat can still become a problem in summer months; this is especially true if you’re wearing your shoes barefoot. CARBON ODOR CLEANER will take care of any unpleasant scents. It is most effective if you spray it in your shoes immediately after wear. Not only does it get rid of sweaty odours, but it will also clear away any smoke smells from your last party.
Every now and again, shoe interiors require a deeper clean. Discolourations or sweat rings can be removed with SNEAKER INSIDE .
Last, but not least: the laces. To return laces to their original lustre, it’s best to remove them and wash them with SNEAKER WASH soap, either by hand or in the machine.
Sneakers in the Washing Machine
Textile sneakers can be washed with SNEAKER WASH and a laundry net in the washing machine. Place your runners in the bag, set the machine to 30° and use 50 ml of SNEAKER WASH . Keep spinning at the lowest spin speed setting to protect your shoes.
It’s even better to wash dirty sneakers by hand, but either way, SNEAKER WASH will leave you with clean and fresh-smelling sneakers. You should always dry your shoes at room temperature and keep them away from heat sources.
Beware: SNEAKER WASH is not suitable for use with leather shoes! Leather should never get completely soaked as it will become brittle. Pay attention to the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions; not every sneaker can be put in the washing machine.

Motorcycle gear has to withstand extreme strain. Alexander from the Kettenritzel motorcycle blog tested Collonil products on his jacket and boots to see if they stand up to the pressure.

After the first signs of spring and my first hopeful ride a few weeks ago, the winter has returned. This gives me some time to take care of my gear before more tour-suitable weather returns. My bike has gotten its yearly service and new tires. I cleaned my helmet inside and out and got a new visor and pinlock to ensure good visibility.
But the thing I always neglect is my jacket, trousers and boots. Regular care is needed to keep both leather and textile gear functional and durable. At the latest, you can find out whether your boots are still waterproof during the next big rain storm.
While the cold weather persists outside, I’m inside making sure my gear (Revit Ignition 2 jacket, Revit Gear 2 trousers) and boots (Alpinestars Roam 2 boots) are ready for the upcoming season.
Collonil sent me some of their products to test out. So, I let my inner cleaner loose and got down to business.
Cleaning

My gear has both leather and textile components. The insect residue from last season is well dispersed and dried on both types of material. I used the ONE FOR ALL foam to give my jacket and trousers a good base clean. The advantage of this product is that it is suitable to use on all types of materials. You apply it with a sponge and it will take care of any major dirt or grime. The first application worked really well, so I only needed to apply it a second time to more stubborn spots and rub lightly with the sponge. ONE FOR ALL maintains your gear’s breathability, nourishes the material and gives it a first layer of water resistance.

I used 1909 LEATHER CREAM on the leather parts of my gear. This gives a deeper clean than the foam and refreshes the colour, but it’s only suitable for smooth leather. Even if you have relatively new gear, the black will look deeper after treatment with this leather cream.

After it worked so well with my Revit jacket, I took my much older and worn ICON Vigilante jacket and gave it the same treatment. This jacket also has mixed materials: the body is textile and the arms are leather. The colour refreshing effect was definitely noticeable on the arms.
Waterproofing
Once cleaning was taken care of, I sprayed all my gear with CARBON PRO waterproofing spray. I was able to get even coverage on my jacket, trousers and boots with several coats applied from about a 30 cm distance. Painting rules apply here: don’t get the surface too wet and let it dry between coats. Unsurprisingly, it looks like clearcoat after applying it to smooth leather, but that disappears once the material dries. In terms of volume, one CARBON PRO can was enough to give my gear three coats of waterproofing spray.

Care
Finally, in order to keep the leather soft and prevent it from drying out, I used 1909 LEATHER LOTION . I used the lotion on both sets of gear. The leather was noticeably softer afterwards. I also used it on my Alpinestar motorcycle boots and they were left with a nice smooth finish.

There is special polish for robust leather garments called CARE FOR LEATHER CLOTHING . This was perfect for my ICON Elsinore boots, especially because the gear shift and shin protectors are made of roughened leather. Normal shoe polish doesn’t really do the trick. Apply it generously, let it sit and after a light polish, you’ll be ready for your next ride.
This week I learned the hard way why regular leather care is so important. I was wearing my ICON Vigilante jacket in the rain and while the leather completely absorbed the products, it wasn’t completely saturated. After a while, rain slowly started soaking into the leather. Once I was back home, I treated the arms with the CARE FOR LEATHER CLOTHING cream, which they absorbed straight away.
The care programme took the greater part of an evening, but as I mentioned, I’d been neglecting regular upkeep. I wash my bike after every tour before putting it in the garage and I’ll do the same with my gear from now on. Dirt gone, products on and you’ll have more fun, longer – plus dry feet.

Before you read the following tips on how to remove various types of stains, we have a word of advice that could save you a lot of work: regularly waterproof your shoes and leather goods. Stains don’t set into waterproofed leather as easily, and in the event they do, they are much simpler to remove.
Of course, these words are likely too little, too late if you have a stained leather shoe sitting in front of you. In this case, all you can do is take a good look at what you’re dealing with. All stains are not created equal, after all. Different types of stains and different types of leather require unique approaches to stain removal.
What to do with red wine stains?
If a drop of red wine lands on your shoe, it can quickly sour the celebratory mood. SHAMPOO DIRECT is a great option for removing wine stains. This classic cleaner is the go-to solution for water-soluble stains, including juice or fruit stains.
Blot dry any excess wine or juice immediately following the spill and then apply the shampoo to the stained area. Press the foam applicator to the leather until the surface is damp with the cleaning solution. Let it sit for some time before using a wet sponge to wipe away the stain and any leftover shampoo. Your shoe will look good as new.
Grease stains
Getting rid of oil and grease stains requires something a bit stronger, namely our REINIGER special cleaning spray. This spray is easy to use and is suitable for use with all types of leather and textiles.
If you’re dealing with smooth leather, simply spray the cleaner on a cloth and wipe the stain away. When dealing with suede, nubuck or textile, lightly spray the material directly and brush the damp surface with a CLEANING BRUSH . Grease stains don’t only come from the dinner table. Leather jackets are notorious for getting oily collar stains over time. Don’t wait to clean your jacket. As soon as you notice signs of buildup, carefully apply REINIGER spray and wipe it clean with the SOFT GUM cleaning rubber. Be sure to give suede jackets a brush afterwards.
How to Remove Blood Stains
A cut finger or bloody nose can leave stubborn stains in their wake. If you find yourself with blood on your leather shoes, boots or jacket, quickly blot as much liquid as you can with a dry towel before treating the leather with SHAMPOO DIRECT . Clean the surface with a moist cloth afterwards and brush with a CREPE BRUSH if necessary, i.e., suede or nubuck.
Older stains can be treated with citric acid or neutral soap. Apply either to a cloth, dampen the old stain with water and then rub the stain away. Be sure to test the chemicals on a less visible part of the leather before use to avoid unwanted colour changes.
Ink Stain Removal
Did your children have a moment of creative genius that overflowed onto your shoes? Or did you accidentally mark your leather jacket with your pen? Either case calls for rapid attention. If it’s a fresh ink stain on smooth leather, CLEANIG CREAM will do the trick. Dried stains typically benefit from treatment with denatured alcohol. However, this may remove coloured finishes from leather so use it sparingly.
You may be able to remove stains from suede or nubuck without any liquid. Place a strip of adhesive tape over the ink mark. If you slowly and carefully remove the tape, the ink may be removed from the fibres. If there is still some residual left behind, try using our CLEANER . You can try your luck with sandpaper to address more stubborn stains.
Iron Away Candle Wax
Candlelight certainly sets the mood, but if wax lands on your shoes, things suddenly feel less romantic. No need to worry, however, you can remove the wax stain in a few simple steps.
First, carefully scratch away the thickest part of the wax. Once that is removed, place blotting paper over the stain and iron over it at a low heat setting. The wax will melt and be absorbed by the paper. Be aware that too much heat will damage the leather. Use Collonil’s REINIGER spray to clean up any bits or pieces left behind.
That’s all folks! Your shoes will be stain-free and good as new. Now you can kick back and relax, perhaps with a glass of red wine on the leather sofa?

Taking care of your shoes doesn’t have to be a monumental task. Waterproof them, let them dry and voilà, your shoes are protected from the elements. There are a few things you should keep in mind, however, to make sure you get the most out of your waterproofing treatment.
Base Coat for Brand New Shoes
You should give all your newly bought shoes thorough treatment with a waterproofing product immediately after purchase. New shoes generally aren’t sufficiently waterproofed by the manufacturer. Spray shoes two or three times prior to their first wear to give them a solid base coat. Later, you can refresh the coat depending on how often you wear the shoes and the seasonal weather conditions.
Proper waterproofing doesn’t only protect leather from moisture, but also from dirt. The waterproof layer prevents hard-to-clean dirt from soaking into deeper layers of the leather. You’ll also quickly learn that waterproofing shoes makes them much easier to clean.

The Correct Order: Clean, Waterproof, Polish
Make sure to always apply water repellent spray before other care products such as polish, but after cleaning. Waterproofing products affect deep layers of the leather, whilst polish works on more surface-level layers.
Of course, exceptions are often the rule. The exception in this case is called NANOPRO , a spray that creates a water-resistant layer on the surface of leather goods and thus should be applied at the very end, after all other care products.
  Step-By-Step Waterproofing Guide

Apply waterproofing spray to your shoes and boots outdoors if possible. If this isn’t an option, make sure you apply any products in a well-ventilated space and away from children. PROTECT & CARE is a good choice for environmentally conscious consumers. The pump spray is part of Collonil’s organic line and is free from propellants and solvents.
Hold the waterproofing spray about one can’s length away from your shoe, i.e., ca. 30cm..
Make sure you apply the water repellent spray evenly and in moderation. The shoe shouldn’t get soaked. Instead of the principle ‘more is better’, think ‘a little bit and often’.
Allow waterproofing spray to dry for at least 20 minutes at room temperature after applying. Avoid drying shoes too close to heat sources as these can cause leather to become brittle.
Repeat application frequently. We recommend refreshing your shoes’ waterproof coat after every 7-10 wears during winter. You should also apply a fresh treatment after each intensive wet cleaning.

Waterproofing Clothes
Your shoes aren’t the only pieces of attire that will benefit greatly from an encounter with waterproof products.
Other articles of clothing, especially porous leather jackets, can easily get water spots if they aren’t properly treated. It’s best to apply water repellent products immediately after purchase. Waterproofing also helps protect leather jackets from getting dirty. After all, if your leather jacket gets dirty, you can’t simply throw it in the wash.
The same can be said of motorcycle gear. In this case, damage from rain, road dust and greasy stains can be quite extreme. However, here it’s also important that the waterproofing spray you use doesn’t affect the breathability of your gear. It’s a difficult balance to strike, but CARBON PRO manages to let moisture out and prevent it from coming in simultaneously.
Functional outdoor or sport clothing and ski gear also benefit from waterproofing. Here, you have the option of using a wash-in waterproof product so you can save yourself the trouble of trying to apply an even coat to a large area with a single spray bottle. Wash-in products also have the advantage of being used solely indoors; no need to stand outside to use them. It’s important to note, however, that this type of treatment also requires repeated application.
Allrounders and Specialists
CARBON PRO is a versatile, reliable and high-performance product for all your waterproofing needs, and is suitable for use with shoes, bags, clothing, textiles and both smooth leather and suede or nubuck. The spray can even be used on items with functional membranes. Thanks to its innovative technology, CARBON PRO prevents moisture from entering the fibres of these fabrics whilst maintaining their breathability. The spray forms a grid structure on the material that allows moisture from within to escape, but prevents any external liquid from entering.

Using an allrounder like CARBON PRO (or NANOPRO ) will take care of most your waterproofing needs. However, in some circumstances you’ll need to turn to specialist products to give appropriate protection to certain materials.

The majority of your shoes are likely made of smooth leather. Are you sure you know how to care for them properly?

There are many types of smooth or full-grain leather, but they all have one thing in common: a grain side that is not buffed. Smooth leather comes in a variety of textures including grained, embossed, structured or completely smooth. If the grain side is buffed or sanded, the leather is considered nubuck.
Most smooth leather shoes on the market are pigmented. This means the leather has a coloured coating. The advantage of pigmentation is that it makes the leather easier to care for and less susceptible to spots.
More porous leathers, such as nappa and anline leathers, are also considered smooth leather. Both of these require special care. In this article, we’ll cover all the ways to care for classic shoes made of smooth leather, which likely make up the greater part of your shoe collection.
Prep Before Cleaning
Before cleaning your shoes, make sure to remove the laces. Use this opportunity to check whether they also require some maintenance or warrant replacement.
And don’t forget to use a shoe tree whilst cleaning. Not only does a shoe tree give you something to hold on to, but it also prevents wrinkles from forming, so cleaning products and polish can be applied more evenly.
Dry Cleaning Smooth Leather Shoes
We always begin the cleaning process with a CLEANING BRUSH to remove any loose dirt or dust. It’s good to get into the habit of doing this every night, because if there’s no dirt on your shoes, it can’t soak into the leather during the next unexpected rain shower.
You can get rid of encrusted dirt with a moist towel. Be sure to apply the same amount of moisture to the entire shoe to prevent the formation of watermarks or rings.
You can use our SOFT GUM to tackle more stubborn spots. It works like an old-fashioned rubber eraser – that’s specialised for smooth leather, of course. It also works wonders on dirty, scuffed soles.
For a more thorough sole cleansing, we recommend using the REINIGUNGSCREME. It will make even light-coloured soles and natural rubber soles shine like new. Don’t worry if some of the sole cleaner comes into contact with the leather upper, it is also suitable for use on the shoe itself.
When Things Get Dirty: Wet Cleaning
In general, you should always start with a dry cleaning before adding moisture. BAMBOO LOTION is the perfect go-to cleaning product for this second step. Not only does the solution clean the leather with natural ingredients, but it also nourishes your shoes with bamboo extract and prevents them from drying out.
Seriously dirty shoes require a more intensive wet cleaning to get at dirt that has soaked deep into the leather. If you find yourself in this situation, try applying CLEAN + CARE foam to your shoes and letting it soak in. Then wipe it – and the dirt – away with a damp towel.
Waterproofing Smooth Leather Shoes
Do you really have to waterproof smooth leather shoes? Whilst smooth leather is certainly more robust than rough leather or textile – especially when it’s regularly treated with wax products – additional waterproofing protects the material even more. This means the leather will stay dry longer and withstand higher levels of water pressure.
Waterproofing doesn’t only protect your shoes from moisture, it also prevents dirt from entering the material and settling deep into the leather.
However, many shoe buyers don’t realise that shoes aren’t always suitably waterproofed by the manufacturer. Passing over your shoes two or three times with waterproofing spray will provide them with a base coat and protect them from dirt and moisture. Also, it will make your shoes easier to clean going forward. A solid waterproofing treatment is halfway to a clean shoe.
How to Apply Waterproofing Spray
When refreshing your shoe’s waterproof coating, apply it directly after the cleaning product. Many people think you should apply it at the very end, but the waterproofing spray effects a deeper layer of the leather than shoe polish and wax, and therefore, it should be applied before subsequent care products.
Of course, you can use our all-rounder waterproofing sprays, but we also have some that are specially designed for use with smooth leather. WATERSTOP RELOADED , for example, offers shoes additional UV protection and is the first spray available without PFCs.
Fans of the top seller CARBON PRO should also take a look at our CARBON WAX spray. The latter offers an extra glossy finish in addition to its renowned waterproofing qualities.
Also, be sure to consider more than just spray products. Our LEATHER GEL is perfect for targeted waterproofing, e.g., for seams, but can also be used on the entire shoe.
Caring for Smooth Leather Shoes - Nourish, Colour and Polish
Once your shoes are clean and protected, it’s time to nourish the leather with care products. A whole host of products fall under the category of shoe care: products to provide the leather with nutrients, refresh the colour and ensure a polished finish. Many care products achieve more than just one of these functions.
1. Nourishment
Leather is a natural material that dries out over time and will eventually become brittle. You can slow the aging process by regularly providing the leather with nutrients.
1909 LEATHER LOTION rejuvenates the material, protects it from losing moisture and keeps it soft and supple.
Our first vegan shoe cream, ORGANIC CREAM , provides nutrients from natural ingredients. Carnauba wax and macadamia oil don’t only make the leather soft, but also give it a natural shine.
2. Colour
Several factors can cause the intense colour of your leather shoes to fade. Whether from UV rays or extended use, pigmented care products can help return shoes to their original lustre. If you can’t find a 100% match for your shoe’s colour, the rule of thumb is to opt for one shade lighter.
Our classic coloured shoe polishes are the WATERSTOP COLOURS series. This versatile product comes in a tube with a handy foam applicator. In addition to refreshing the colour, the product provides the leather with nutrients and – as the name suggests – boosts its water resistant properties.
If you have a soft spot for colourful shoes and are looking for a more obscure tone, our SHOE CREAM line may be your best bet. With extra pigment, this product gives shoes a particularly intense boost of colour and is available in over 40 different tones.
We recommend using COMBI WHITE CLASSIC for white leather shoes. The coloured cream will make your shoes look like new.
3. Shine
A polished shine is the cherry on top for most shoe care enthusiasts. This process involves applying a wax-based product followed by polishing.
Traditionalists tend to go for hard wax in metal tins. 1909 WAX POLISH contains high-quality wax and nourishing oils. Wax doesn’t only give your shoes a glossy finish, but it also protects it from outside influences and gives shoes a certain level of water resistance.
Others prefer to use the high-gloss 1909 CRÉME DE LUXE , the successor to our legendary DIAMANT cream. It protects your shoes with natural waxes and oils, refreshes the colour and offers wonderful grip.
How to Properly Apply Shoe Polish and Wax
The secret of proper shoe care is often a question of volume. Typically, the answer is: less product is more.
If you think a thick layer of shoe polish will do your shoes a world of good, think again. Leather can only absorb a limited amount of any given product. If you apply too much, the dried shoe polish will form a greasy film that makes the leather look dull. Also, you’ll ruin your polishing brush if the bristles get caked with excess polish.
The same goes for shoe wax. The more wax you apply to your shoes, the longer it takes for it to harden and polish. Furthermore, excess wax tends to gather in seams and wrinkles and break off whilst walking. This could give the appearance of broken leather.
It’s important to use the proper method when applying shoe polish and wax. We recommend using a POLISHING CLOTH for use with smooth leather shoes. This will give you the most feel for the material and the product.
The APPLICATION BRUSH is a great way to apply tinned products (SHOE CREAM or 1909 CRÈME DE LUXE, for example) without getting your hands dirty. Brushes are also able to reach those nooks and crannies that cloths can’t, i.e., punched patterns and seams.
Shoe Shine Like a Pro – How to Polish Smooth Leather
Allow shoe polish to sit for about 15 minutes before touching it. This gives the leather time to absorb the important nutrients.
Begin the polishing process with a horsehair brush (our POLISHING BRUSH , for example). This type of bristle is much softer than typical cleaning brushes, but still hard enough to remove extra polish from seams, stitching and holes.
Wax requires a bit more patience; leave it sit for at least one hour.
Afterwards, you can polish it to a high gloss. A goat hair brush, such as our 1909 POLISHING BRUSH , is perfect for this. The bristles are so soft that they won’t leave marks behind in the wax – after all, the goal is to achieve the smoothest surface possible.
Polish the leather with long, even brushstrokes. This will create friction that softens the wax and gives the leather a shiny surface. You can enhance this effect even further by pulling a nylon stocking over the brush.
Need even more shine? Why not give water polishing a try? It is much easier than most people think.

The lines and wrinkles on oiled leather are distinct characteristics of the material rather than flaws. But what exactly is oiled leather and how is it different from other types of leather?

Oiled leather, alternatively called waxed or greased leather, is typically robust leather that has had an oily, waxy or greasy finish applied. The finish makes the leather soft and very durable. For this reason, oiled leather is a beloved material for making belts, bags and furniture – and shoes, of course.
Oiled leather is an especially popular choice for outdoor shoes and hiking boots. It is also used for making dog collars and leads as it is both stable and soft. Riding saddles are likewise made of this material, which is sometimes called saddle leather.
Pull-Up Leather and Porous Oiled Leather
Oiled leather is related to so-called pull-up leather. The latter refers to nubuck or suede that has been finished with an oily coating. There are many different types of oiled leather, including those with thick or thin, smooth or coarse, matt or glossy and coloured or transparent finishes.
So how can you tell if leather belongs to this category? It’s easy. Simply scratch your fingernail across the surface. If your nail leaves a notable mark, you’re dealing with oiled leather.

The great thing about oiled leather is that it is relatively easy to care for. Some types are porous – all nubuck and suede varieties plus some smooth varieties – which means moisture can easily enter the material.
You can find out if the leather is porous by dropping water onto the surface and seeing whether the material turns dark. If it does, you’d be wise to waterproof the leather.
Waterproof and Clean Oiled Leather
It’s best to choose a waterproofing spray that is specially geared toward sturdy leathers. This will help preserve the finish. Our OUTDOOR BIWAX spray contains nourishing waxes and the RUSTICAL CLASSIC waterproofing spray is specially developed to maintain the typical rustic look of oiled leathers.
If your shoes are waterproofed, they’ll likely only require a dry clean. Any large, caked mud can be removed with a CLEANING BRUSH. Use caution, however, as applying too much pressure can scratch the oiled leather. Small spots can be removed using the NUBUK BOX .
Oiled Leather Shoe Care – Vintage vs. Neglected
We recommend using our RUSTICAL product line to keep oiled leather feeling smooth. The RUSTICAL cream and the RUSTICAL special lotion are suitable for both rough and smooth oiled leathers.

Collonil has accompanied adventurers on expeditions to the most remote corners of this Earth. Now, winter sport enthusiasts Steffi and Mario from the Alpin-Blog are going to test our line of outdoor products.

We are passionate about mountaineering and spend a lot of time in nature with our daughter Lena Sophie (7 months old). Of course, we prefer to explore when the sun is shining, but we’ll still go out in poor weather if the temptation is too great. We live in the Alpine Rhine Valley – essentially in the middle of the Alps – and are on our skis practically every weekend during the winter.
It’s interesting because conditions can change so rapidly when you’re out there. It can be bitter cold at the start of the trip and then reach sweltering temperatures that are unbearable even in a t-shirt – and all that in one day! We carry large packs and work up quite a sweat when we’re carving a new trail. The next day, the same clothes have to be able to withstand snow and wind. Finding gear that is suitable for both strenuous exercise (keyword: breathable) and extreme weather is certainly a challenge. We really value high-functioning gear!
Modern textiles definitely take the cake when it comes to damp/wet/windy conditions – especially when they are well cared for. That’s why we were more than happy to give our outdoor gear a ‘fresh coat’ with Collonil’s ACTIVE products at the start of the 2017/18 winter season, which had unseasonably early and intense snowfall. We’d like to share our experiences with you here:
UNIVERSAL PROTECTOR
This waterproofing spray is easy to use and effective. We applied it to our clothes (hard and softshells) and our backpacks and let it soak in overnight. Ever since, rain and snow beads off our gear and the interiors stay dry.
We even brought the spray along with us in the car for emergencies. We also waterproofed the outside (!) of the blue softshell cover on our daughter’s hiking carrier (outside softshell, inside fleece). Now the cover stays dry in snow and light rain and we can be at ease during our adventures.
Pros: The spray lasts longer than wash-in waterproofing solutions. There’s no need for a washing machine so you can use it on the go. It can also be used for more targeted application.

OUTDOOR CLEANER
Imagine you’re sitting in front of your tent on a mild summer evening and serving up a spoonful of freshly made pasta when – whoops – the tomato sauce spills down the front of your expensive outdoor gear. Man! If you’re travelling with children, you know this story well...
OUTDOOR CLEANER is made for these types of mishaps. We tested it on a pair of fairly dirty yellow ski pants . The spots were from a trip on rough terrain where Mario slipped and fell on muddy ground. At home about a week later, I sprayed the dirty spots, added some water and wiped the area with a towel – voilá– the spots disappeared. The colour of the pants wasn’t affected at all, which is obviously important.
We liked the flexibility of using this product as well. It’s perfect for on the go when you don’t have access to a washing machine.

OUTDOOR SHOE DEO
Between you and me, the ‘scent’ inside of ski boots is a true test for relationships. Washing helps in the short run, but after five wears at most, things are back to their original state. Thankfully, versatile SHOE DEO offers some much appreciated relief in all types of shoes. You can ask your partner whether it’s needed ;-)
Environmentally-conscious Steffi was happy to see that the deodorant didn’t contain harmful propellants and Mario is delighted that he no longer has to leave his ski boots out to air in the damp, cold garage. Plus, it works with other active footwear like climbing shoes!

OUTDOOR ACTIVE COMBI SET
We’re all about simple handling. Wash-in products offer ease of use and long-lasting effects.
Make sure to read the tiny white tag (i.e., washing instructions) on your clothes before washing them. You can find a key to understanding the symbols online. Temperature, spinning and method of drying are all important points to take note of, especially since not following them may cause serious damage to your gear. As a rule, you should only wash outdoor wear when it’s truly necessary. Membranes caked with sweat just can’t function to their full potential.
OUTDOOR TEXTILE WASH is a special detergent developed for functional textiles that preserves the breathability of membranes. It’s great for softshells, hard shells, down and fleece. We noticed that it didn’t cause unattractive pilling on our fleeces which is a big positive. The best part? After a good wash, you no longer have to feel bad around your outdoor buddies;-)
We decided to give our pants and jackets an extra waterproofing treatment in the washing machine with WASH IN PROTECTOR . After the wash, you can quickly pop the items in the dryer to optimise the waterproofing affects. If you don’t have a dryer, you can carefully use an iron (with a layer in between). Caution: Some materials don’t do well with heat and can only be air dried (keyword: taped seams).
In our experience, this combination works wonders with outdoor jackets and ski pants. We even brought worn-out gear like an old yellow 2.5 layer jacket from Mountain Hardwear back to life using it. Now that the snow and rain beads and rolls off, Mario has started wearing the jacket again on ski tours. It’s extra important that water doesn’t soak into your outer layer in heavy snow. In fact, when you’re high up in the Alps, this function is absolutely necessary for survival – you have to make sure your body doesn’t freeze!

LEATHER & TEX LOTION
Every once and a while, we are out in winter weather without skis. In these instances we’re usually wearing snowshoes or mountain boots; for example, during evening sledge rides or if there isn’t enough snow for a proper ski tour. If your footwear absorbs snow, however, the fun is over pretty quickly. Wet feet are cold feet. If you’re only out for a little while, it’s okay, but it’s a definite no-go for longer adventures. In any case, it’s good to take care of your winter footwear because it helps keep the outer material (synthetic or genuine leather) soft. It’s kind of like shoe wellness.
A good product for this is LEATHER & TEX LOTION . You can apply it in about one minute and it seriously works wonders! We tested it on one of Steffi’s old trekking boots from the basement. The next day we went for a hike in soft snow up our local mountain. We treated the left shoe with the spray the night before, but not the right one. You can clearly see the results in the photo. Not surprisingly, her foot got cold pretty quickly. Afterwards, she treated the second boot with the lotion.☺

SUMMARY
Well-cared-for outdoor gear means more – and longer – fun out in nature. A fine Gore-tex Pro jacket is useless if it gets wet after a short rain shower. When it’s properly waterproofed, the water simply rolls off. If that isn’t the case, then it’s time for another treatment!
The Collonil Outdoor Active series is great for people like us who’d rather spend their time out in nature than in the laundry room. The products are uncomplicated and do what they claim to do.

The sofa is home to many of life’s comforts. It may serve as a place to enjoy a glass of wine while watching a television programme or your child’s favourite spot to get creative. It’s also likely your pet’s most beloved place to relax (especially if the owners aren’t around).
But all of these activities can certainly leave their mark on upholstered furniture and no one enjoys having drink spills, cat urine or marker stains on the couch.
Juice Stains on the Sofa - What to do?
Regardless whether your sofa is made of leather or a fabric such as microfibre, you can remove stains quickly and easily with the proper products. If you’re dealing with surface-level stains, try using dry cleaning products in order to give your sofa a more gentle clean. SOFT GUM is great for erasing light stains from smooth leather surfaces. CLEANER is a more intensive dry cleaning product that even works on set stains on suede or full-grain leather.
Juice or grease stains left behind from your latest telly snack can be easily removed with LEATHER & TEXTILE CLEANER . As the name suggests, it can be used on both leather and fabric sofas and is great for tackling water-soluble or light grease stains.
Apply the cleaner directly to your smooth leather couch. If you have a suede or fabric sofa, use a CLEANING BRUSH after application to brush away the dirt. Finally, wipe the area clean with a damp POLISHING CLOTH to remove any remaining cleaning product.
What about more serious oil stains?
If you have a more serious grease or oil stain, you’ll need a stronger cleaner such as Collonil’s REINIGER spray. It is suitable for use on all types of leather and is easy to apply.
To clean a smooth leather sofa, spray the REINIGER on a cloth and use it to gently rub the stain away. If you have a suede or fabric couch, apply the REINIGER directly to the stain and brush the damp material with a CLEANING BRUSH . Remember: Less is more in this case. You only need to apply a thin layer.
Even if you handle your sofa with extreme caution, it may become discoloured over time. Oils from your skin and body lotion leave traces on both leather and fabric sofas. SOFT GUM is great for erasing any small flecks. For rough leather, use the VELOURS-BOY , for fabrics, the CLEANING BRUSH. The REINIGER spray is perfect for more sizeable marks.
Special Circumstances: Markers and Cat Urine on the Sofa
If your biro or marker just slipped from your hand, you can remove the fresh stain with CLEANIG CREAM . If the mark has already had time to dry, your best bet may be denatured alcohol. Of course, you run the risk of removing the finish from your leather sofa so do proceed with caution.
Removing cat urine is a particular challenge for pet lovers. Cats can smell lingering scents longer than humans can and may take the opportunity to mark the same spot twice.
To remove the stain for good, clean it with LEATHER & TEXTILE CLEANER . Afterwards, apply BREEZE odour neutraliser to slightly damp suede or fabric surfaces. This removes odour-causing bacteria and gets rid of other unpleasant odours such as cigarette smoke. However, the finish on smooth leather surfaces may be affected by BREEZE and thus it’s not recommended for use with this type of leather.
How to Care for Your Sofa
Once you’ve finished cleaning, your sofa will likely require some extra care. Similar to leather shoes, leather sofas can get dry and brittle if they aren’t taken care of. LEATHER LOTION offers optimal nourishment for smooth leather and also helps to refresh the tone of the leather. Regularly brushing suede sofas with a VELOURS-BOY will help maintain the texture.
Once it’s all fresh and clean, your sofa will once again be the inviting heart of your home and ready for anything: movie nights, children’s playtime and the pet’s nap time.

Shoe shopping: For some it’s a hobby, for others, a necessary evil that they’d rather avoid. Regardless of how seasoned a shoe shopper you are, there are a few points you should pay attention to in order to find the perfect fit every time.
Find the Proper Size
You may have noticed when trying on different shoes that your typical size doesn’t always fit. Shoe sizes vary widely from brand to brand. Also, most people have one foot that is slightly larger than the other – sometimes a person’s feet are a whole size apart. Thus, it’s important to try both shoes on before you buy. If there is a slight difference in fit due to size or width, the PERFECT semi-insole may help balance things out.
The "Rule of Thumb" test has proven itself to be good way to find a person’s ideal fit. There should be at least a thumb’s width between the end of your toe and the front of the shoe. If there’s less space than that, your toes will likely strike against the toe cap.
Things are slightly different when it comes to shoes with cut out insteps. Ballerina flats, pumps or men’s slippers fit into this category. Less than a thumb’s width is usually sufficient in this case, and sometimes necessary for a snug fit and secure grip. That’s why you can often go down a size in shoes with a substantial heel.
If you’re buying winter boots, make sure you consider whether you’d like to wear them with thick socks or insoles. Bring a pair of winter socks with you to the shoe store or ask if you can test out your insoles.
It’s important to look at shoe length both whilst sitting and standing. Stand up and take a few steps wearing the shoes. That way, all of your body weight will be on your feet and you’ll get a realistic impression of how much your foot slides forward in the shoe.
If your toes hit the toe cap, the shoes are clearly too short. If you don’t feel like you have a solid foothold in the shoe, they are likely too large or too wide across the instep. If this is the case, you’ll feel your foot slide forward in the shoe and your heel slip out the back.
Pay Attention to Width
A good fit isn’t only dependent on shoe length, however. Width also plays a large role in whether a shoe sits comfortably on your foot. The base of your foot shouldn’t be confused with width. Foot width takes both the base width and the height of your arch into account.
The interplay between width and length often presents challenges for those with narrow or wide feet. It often leads to people buying the incorrect shoe size. This can damage the shoe, but even worse, it can seriously injure your feet.
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Whilst leather is indeed flexible, it has its limits. If you have very wide feet and wear narrow shoes, you’ll have to deal with more than just sore feet. The leather and seams are put under more strain and are more likely to split at the sides. If you’re wearing shoes with cutouts, the pressure can even damage your skin.
Some people tend to buy shoes that are too large since they feel wider and more comfortable, but that often means less grip, which is also bad for your feet.
Those with narrow feet tend to buy shoes that are too small. Of course, this can also hurt your feet because your toes are pressed for space. Leather can stretch side to side, but not front to back. Note: It doesn’t necessarily mean that the shoe is too small if your foot isn’t completely unfurled. Socks or stockings that are too tight could also be the culprit!
If you select the proper size, but they are too wide, you’re left with very little stability in your shoe. The front of your foot grips at the widest part of the shoe. If a shoe is too wide, deep creases can form, which don’t only harm the leather and seams, but also make the shoes look more worn. If your shoes fit well, but still have a few points that rub, try stretching the leather with STRETCH foam. Of course, this isn’t an option if the shoe is much too narrow.
If the shoe width is off, it’s unlikely that a different size will solve the problem, especially if it doesn’t stand up to the thumb test. A shoe that is much too narrow or wide, but has the perfect length is simply not the right shoe for your foot.
The Best Time to Buy Shoes
Have you ever wondered why your new shoes fit perfectly in the shop yesterday evening, but are far too wide today? This was probably due to the fact that your foot volume fluctuates during the day. The more you stand and walk, the more your feet tend to swell.
Thus, it’s better if you don’t go shoe shopping at the end of a long day out or on a day when your legs or body were put to the test, i.e., after intense sports activity or a long trip. If you do, the pair you buy will likely be too wide on a normal day. It’s much better to go shoe shopping in the middle of the day.
However, if you work in an environment that requires a lot of standing and walking, the evening is actually the perfect time for you to shop. It’s also a good time to try on summer sandals so you won’t have to later suffer from overly-snug straps in warmer weather.
Break Them in - Here’s How
Some new pairs of shoes need a little time before they’re really comfortable. The good news is, leather shoes stretch from heat and moisture. Thus, shoes that are a bit too narrow will widen out perfectly after a few wears.
Wear your new shoes every day at home – if possible with thick socks – and be sure to use shoe trees when you take them off. Also, try using STRETCH foam on the tight spots before each wear.
Sometimes the soles of high-quality leather shoes are somewhat stiff to begin with. Breaking the shoe in stretches the leather sole and makes it much more flexible.
If you’ve paid close attention to finding the proper size and width when buying your shoes, they’ll be ready to take out in no time and you can enjoy the simple pleasure of wearing comfortable, well-fitting shoes.

Clean, Roughen, Polish: The Proper Brushes for Each Task
You’ve probably noticed that not all shoe brushes are created equal. Especially if you’ve ever tried to scrape off hardened bits of dirt with a fine goat hair brush. Dress shoes require more gentle handling than their robust outdoor counterparts, and suede requires more attention than smooth leather.
  1. Cleaning Brushes
If your boots are caked in a layer of mud after an enjoyable trek through the forest, the first thing to do is let them dry. Then, go at them with a stiff brush suited to rugged footwear such as the CLEANING BRUSH . This will also help get rid of any lingering stones or pebbles that are stuck in the soles.
If your fine leather or textile shoes are dirty from everyday wear, brushing them with a softer CLEANING BRUSH suited to textile or leather will likely suffice. To keep the texture of suede shoes in top nick, on the other hand, it’s best to regularly brush them with a CREPE BRUSH . The smaller side bristles are perfect for cleaning hard-to-reach seams.
  2. Care Brushes
The small APPLICATION BRUSH is the ideal tool for applying care products that are stored in tins or pots. Make sure to use a different brush for each cream polish or wax to avoid mixing colours.
Afterwards, make your fine leather shoes shine like new with the soft POLISHING BRUSH . This will also help to remove any excess colour care.

  Mild to Intense Cleanin g
Different cleaning methods are recommended depending on how dirty your shoes are. However, a well-equipped shoe shine kit is ready for anything.
  1. Dry Cleaning
Using dry cleaning products is one of the most gentle ways to clean your shoes. In addition to simply brushing away surface dirt, you can try using special dry cleaners. SOFT GUM , for example, erases spots from sensitive materials like fine smooth leather, fabric and microfibre. The NUBUK BOX is perfect for gently cleaning suede and removing any lingering specks.
  2. Wet Cleaning
BAMBOO LOTION is a great product for dealing with harder-to-remove stains whilst also nourishing the shoe material. Apply it to smooth leather using a POLISHING CLOTH and to suede using the softer CLEANING BRUSH .
If the dirt has already soaked deep into the material, a more substantial wet cleaning is likely necessary. CLEAN & CARE helps to remove those deep stubborn spots without drying out the leather. Afterwards, make sure you let your shoes rest and completely dry.
  Cleaning Your Soles
Light coloured soles in particular require special cleaning to keep them looking like new. The CLEANING CREAM is perfect for cleaning sneaker midsoles or soles made of crepe.

  Proper Protection
Make sure you leave room in your at-home shoe shine kit for various waterproofing products. Not only do these help protect your shoes from moisture, but they also prevent dirt from soaking into the material.
CARBON PRO is an all-rounder for smooth leather, suede and fabric shoes as well as shoes with special waterproof membranes. If you have a pair of shoes made of fine leather that requires a product containing wax, try 1909 SUPREME WAX . You can clean and protect seams from moisture with LEATHER GEL .

  The Final Step: Shoe Care
So now that your shoes are clean and protected against further damage, they likely need some nourishment. This is especially true after a wet cleaning. Applying 1909 LEATHER LOTION will help prevent leather shoes from drying out and cracking. Even if you use wax instead of cream polish, the lotion gives the material the moisture it needs to stay smooth and supple.
Don’t forget: Leather soles also require protection and care! Applying SOHLENTONIC will waterproof your soles and help them stay flexible.
Colour Care with Cream Polish or Wax
Applying lotion and tonics will certainly make your shoes look fresher, but they’ll likely also benefit from some additional colour care. Keep a collection of the most common colours in your kit or at least invest in the colours you most often wear.
We recommend using WATERSTOP COLOURS for smooth leather and NUBUK & TEXTILE products for suede. Both of these products nourish the shoes whilst also brightening their colour.
If achieving a high-gloss finish is at the top of your list, try using 1909 WAX POLISH for your smooth leather shoes. Wax not only gets shoes shining, but also offers a layer of protection from the outside world.

Brush off leather is a type of smooth leather. During the production process, the leather is rolled, smoothed and then polished. The result? A high-gloss silky shine that looks both elegant and high-end – the perfect look for evening wear. Brush off leather has all the advantages of smooth leather and more. The solid smooth surface isn’t as prone to gathering dust and dirt and that makes cleaning easier.
Blisters from Brush off Leather Shoes – You Have to Wear Them In
Rolling the leather during the production process makes it harder than other types of leather and thus, more prone to cracking. The best way to prevent this is to wear in the shoes so the material will gradually get softer and fit better to your foot. Applying STRETCH foam beforehand makes things even easier. Spray the foam onto stiff points before putting on your shoes. 1909 CRÈME DE LUXE nourishes and softens the material even further, whilst also refreshing the colour. Remove any excess polish with the 1909 POLISHING BRUSH and your shoes will shine like new.
Brush off Leather Requires Special Waterproofing
Brush off leather has excellent temperature-balancing qualities and allows moisture to escape from the shoe. However, due to the smoothed surface, it’s not as water resistant as other types of smooth leather. The material requires a particular type of waterproofing that both protects and cares for the leather. Use a waterproofing spray that contains wax and nourishes the leather such as 1909 SUPREME WAX . Once the spray has dried, polish your shoes with a soft cotton towel.

They are the vital unsung heroes that give our shoes stability. However, we often ignore the soles and seams of our shoes when we clean them. The result? Leaky or broken shoes.

When you buy a new pair of shoes, you usually look at the overall design and materials used for the upper. Even when you clean and polish your favourites, the shaft tends to get most of the attention. But it’s important that you don’t ignore the soles or stitching, because they are two big contributors to wearing comfort.
Binding Element: Stitching
Today, many shoe uppers and soles are simply glued together. However, in classic leather shoes, the individual parts of the shaft, as well as the upper and soles, are sewn together. Synthetic threads made of polyester and polyamide are predominantly used in this day and age. Shoes that are expected to withstand a bit rougher conditions, such as trekking boots or skater shoes, have reinforced seams at certain vulnerable points.
Caring for Stitched Shoes
Seam Tip #1: Special Cleaning Brushes
Although seams get cleaned and sprayed when you’re cleaning your shoe uppers, they also require a bit of individualised attention. Brushing stitching with the narrow side of the CREPE BRUSH will allow you to clean all the cracks and crevices.
  Seam Tip #2: Targeted Waterproofing
It’s important to apply waterproof spray evenly from a distance of at least 30 cm, but that’s not quite enough for seams, which require more direct waterproofing. LEATHER GEL is more suitable for targeted application. It absorbs into the materials and nourishes the surrounding leather.
Seam Tip #3: Pay Attention to Differences in Colour
Do your shoes have light stitching against darker leather? If so, make sure you treat your seams with neutral polishes and waxes in order to preserve these highlighted accents. L LEATHER GEL is well suited for light-coloured seams.
Seam Tip #4: Shoehorns Protect Seams
Properly putting on and taking off your shoes also helps to protect stitching. Don’t just slide your foot into your shoe, use a shoehorn.
The Many Layers of the Sole
Seams aren’t the only things that offer your feet stability, the soles also play a major role. Most people only think about the outsole, but soles are actually comprised of several layers that serve different purposes:

Cover sole: The lining that you see in the bottom of the shoe
Insole: The interior piece that connects the shaft and sole
Outsole: The exterior sole that keeps the shoe dry and protects your foot

Stay Neat with Fresh Insoles
Sole Tip #1: Clean Your Shoe Interiors
There isn’t any other part of a shoe that comes into contact with more sweat than the insole, and thus it should be cleaned regularly. The cover sole serves mostly aesthetic purposes and usually rests on top of the actual insole. Not only does this make shoes more comfortable, but it also ensures a balanced climate inside your shoes. If the material isn’t breathable, however, your shoe will get warm fast. The result? Hot, sweaty feet and unpleasant odours.
BREEZE spray makes sure your shoes stay smelling fresh as it binds with odour-causing molecules. If you want to give the inside of your shoes a deeper clean, INSIDE FRESH & CLEAN is a suitable option. For additional levels of hygiene and comfort, you can try using replaceable insoles.
Keep Outsoles Looking Clean
Sole Tip #2: Clean Soles, Clean Shoes
Outsoles aren’t only worn down due to mechanical strain, but also from dirt and moisture. Stones and rocks embedded in outsoles aren’t only annoying to walk on, but they also damage the sole. You can remove these with a CLEANING BRUSH and then rinse the sole with water.
The part of the sole that you see from the side, the midsole, requires a bit of extra attention when cleaning. Use CLEANING CREAM to keep white soles and crepe soles looking bright.
Flexible and Dry Leather Soles
Sole Tip #3: Clean Leather Soles that Don’t Slip
Leather soles are more robust that many people think. They hold their shape better and are easier to repair than rubber soles. In addition, they are more breathable and extremely comfortable. Plus, with the right treatment, they can remain sufficiently water resistant.
Many people use sole oils on leather soles. These help maintain elasticity, but don’t necessarily help with waterproofness. The disadvantage, of course, is that the oils often make soles more slippery and they can also soak into the upper leather. If that happens, it limits options for follow-up repairs as glued soles won’t stick anymore.
SOHLE TONIC nourishes leather soles and prevents rubbing without making the material more slippery or more difficult to repair. It also waterproofs the soles and helps prevent moisture rings from forming on the upper.
Repairs – When are they necessary?
Sole Tip #4: Visit the Cobbler
Even well-cared-for soles get worn down every now and again and warrant replacing. Take your shoes to a trusted shoemaker if you start seeing clear signs of wear or worn down soles; at the very latest, if you can see the insole popping through. Once freshly soled, your shoes will remain comfortable, stylish companions for a good while longer.

Many women have a favourite handbag in their wardrobe. Depending on their style, it might be a high-quality leather bag from a top brand or a funky vintage handbag. However, regardless of how well protected you store a purse, it’s bound to be exposed to quite a lot out in the real world. We tend to cram them full to the brim, scrape them up again things and set them on the ground rain or shine. Yet somehow, handbags seem to withstand it all. Even so, they do require a little extra care every now and again, just like your favourite shoes. Try giving your favourite handbag a small wellness programme with proper care products and get it to shine like new.
Clean and Condition Your Purse
If your purse is only slightly dirty, try giving it a dry clean. Brush fabric bags with a CLEANING BRUSH and suede handbags with a VELOURS-BOY brush. Smooth leather is best cleaned with a soft cotton towel. The SOFT GUM cleaning rubber is perfect for gently cleaning smooth leather, fabric and microfibre bags. Light marks and spots on suede can be removed with the CLEANER CLASSIC dry cleaning rubber.
If the dirt has had more time to set into the fabric, you may have to opt for a wet clean. RUSTICAL CLASSIC lotion is perfect for rustic-looking handbags with a wax coating. BAMBOO LOTION will get rid of any dust or dirt on smooth leather, suede and fabric purses. Make sure you brush the suede before and after cleaning with the VELOURS-BOY brush. That way, the fibres won’t stick together and the texture will stay intact.
We recommend using 1909 LEATHER CREAM on smooth leather; it helps prevent cracking and keeps the fine material looking vibrant. The cream even helps repair light scratches. Another tip: Don’t use coloured polishes on your handbag. The close proximity between your purse and your clothes could cause the colour to rub off onto the fabric.
Shield Against Dirt
Last, but not least, your handbag will certainly appreciate being shielded from water. Next time you waterproof your shoes, spray your purse as well. CARBON PRO is suitable for use on all materials, including suede, smooth leather and textiles. Keep your favourite pieces protected from unplanned showers and all those other bumps and spots.

It happens to everyone at some point: You get home after a long, hot day and notice your t-shirt reeks of sweat. Not to worry, you can just pop it into the washing machine. The following list, however, deals with harder-to-get-at odours. Not only are they unpleasant, but they’re also difficult to neutralise.
7. Smelly Shoes
Here at Collonil, we love shoes. Bacteria feel the same way, albeit in a slightly different way. They love the dark, warm and moist environment inside of shoes for multiplying and breaking down human sweat. A by-product of this process, of course, is the well-known and widely-despised stinky feet smell.
6. Food Smells in Your Suit
Midday cravings for greasy chips or a spicy takeout? You’d probably enjoy your indulgence a lot more if you weren’t constantly reminded of it back in the office. Food smells can linger in your formal wear longer than the food stays in your stomach.

5. Pet Odours in Upholstery and Carpets
We’re sure your beloved furry friend loves cosying up to you and finding the best spot on your new sofa or carpet. It’s all fine and well until the wet dog runs in the door or the cat decides to use the spot as a litter box. The distinct smell of cat urine isn’t one that disappears after a simple spot treatment.
4. Musty Smell in Winter Jackets
As the temperatures start dropping, it’s time to unpack your down winter jacket from storage. Unfortunately, they are often kept in cellars and attics, but those are rarely the best storage spaces for clothing. It’s typically too cold, damp or mouldy, which all leave seasonal clothing with an unpleasant musty odour. The washing machine is no help with down, of course, and the tulips are likely to be in bloom before the smell dissipates on its own.
3. Cigarette Smoke in the Car
Any non-smoker who’s ridden in a smoker’s car knows what we’re on about. The smell of nicotine can cause some people to feel nauseous or have headaches. A single cigarette is often enough to set them off. But the smell of stale cigarette smoke finds its way so deeply into upholstery and into every corner of the car that it’s not only sensitive noses that feel bothered.
2. Sweaty Odour in Caps
A cap is a vital accessory for the youth of today and the young at heart. It’s another one of those items that’s worn everyday and comes into direct contact with skin and hair. Again, this isn’t something you can just toss into the washing machine, unless you want to ruin your cap. Hats with visors made of cardboard are particularly sensitive to water. It doesn’t take much imagination to bring to mind the unpleasant odours that develop under those lids.

1. Sport Bag Odours
The worst and most frustrating of them all: the gym bag. Sporting bags are home to a symphony of well-known soloists, including the sport shoes smelling of stinky feet, the freshly-worn sweaty sport shirt and the drenched towel (“Oops that was from last week!”). When they all come together, your gym bag can quickly become a sensory nightmare for any nearby nose.
If you find yourself in any of these situations, you’re likely begging for a simple solution. BREEZE Odour Neutraliser is a quick and easy way to remove unpleasant odours from clothing, bags, shoes and furniture. In contrast to textile deodorants, BREEZE has an innovative active ingredient that prevents odour-causing molecules from taking hold via a bonding process.
For the best results, spray BREEZE on damp clothing as the binding agent is moisture activated. The spray works right side up and upside down, making it straightforward to apply to shoes, bags and other hard-to-reach corners.

Whether you’re working in construction, restaurants or laboratories, work shoes are often a required part of the uniform. Some countries even have laws demanding employers provide their staff with suitable and well-maintained safety shoes. But it’s also in your own best interest to keep your work shoes clean and in tip-top shape.
4 Good Reasons to Clean Your Work Shoes
Clean and well-maintained work shoes offer you numerous benefits:

  No unpleasant odours
  Improved wearing comfort
  Ensured safety
  Longer shoe life

Work boots or shoes are often exposed to a wide range of stressors. If you don’t keep them in good shape, they will wear down faster, which also threatens their level of safety. Here are some easily tips that can help you keep them in proper shape.
Smelly Work Boots - What To Do?
Despite your best efforts to shower daily and always wear fresh socks, your shoes will still likely develop unpleasant odours over time. These occur when bacteria start breaking down the sweat left behind in shoes. Please don’t make any rash decisions like soaking your work boots in a strong disinfectant solution or tossing them into the washing machine! Both of these methods can seriously damage the shoe material. There are a limited number of shoe types that are truly machine washable and they will be clearly labelled by the manufacturer.
If sweaty odours have already taken hold in your safety shoes, try cleaning their interiors with INSIDE FRESH & CLEAN . Repeat this treatment on a regular basis. To keep things even fresher, spray your shoes with BREEZE after every wear. This spray isn’t simply a shoe deodorant, it actually binds with the odour-causing molecules and prevents them from smelling.
  Avoid Odours With Thorough Drying
One very easy and effective odour-fighting measure is properly airing out your work boots. Despite the fact that many shoes are made of breathable materials, moisture can easily start to gather inside frequently-worn work shoes. Freshly-removed work shoes do not belong in the wardrobe, nor do they belong next to powerful heat sources like radiators or direct sunlight. Ideally, you should air out your shoes for at least 24 hours in a warm and dry environment after each wear. The best way to do this is to have two pairs so you can alternate each day.
Loosen your laces after taking off your work boots and pull the tongue forward so the interior has a fair chance to dry out. Also, don’t forget to remove any insoles. Shoe trees, such as the> FORMA , are also useful for keeping shoes open and airy, which allows them to dry and helps maintain their shape.
Comfortable Work Shoes - Interior Care
The interiors of your work shoes don’t only appreciate a good cleaning, they also require regular upkeep. This is especially true if you wear leather work boots. Leather interiors can become rough and brittle from repeated exposure to moisture and dirt. The result: The leather rubs and eventually splits. Properly caring for your work shoes with products like ORGANIC CREAM helps nourish the smooth leather, which in turn offers a higher level of wearing comfort.
Unfortunately, replacing insoles for hygienic or comfort purposes is not always advisable for work boots. Many safety shoes shouldn’t be altered as this could impair their safety functions. Risk of injury could increase if your shoes have different levels of insulation/conductivity or if you alter the distance between your toes and the steel cap, for example.
How to Clean Leather and Fabric Work Shoes
Brush leather work shoes with a CLEANING BRUSH after each wear. Fabric shoes can be brushed with a CLEANING BRUSH . If your shoes aren’t just dusty, but really dirty, you should really do a wet clean.
Some shoes are treated with a coloured outer coating. This layer may be more easily removed than other finishes and thus, you should proceed with caution when cleaning your shoes with moisture and coloured polishes. Apply any polish as thinly as possible and use very little pressure. It’s best to test new products on less visible parts of the shoe first.
Leather and fabric safety shoes can be cleaned with CLEAN & CARE CLASSIC . Smooth leather, synthetic materials and rubber shoes are best treated with LEATHER SOAP CLASSIC , which has lipid replenishing properties. This means that nourishing oils are returned to and rebalanced in the shoes materials. You can even clean the sole of your work shoes with this product.
Do you work in an environment where oil and grease is constantly landing on your shoes? Our REINIGER special cleaner was developed specifically with you in mind!
  Maintaining Waterproof Work Shoes
To protect your shoes from moisture and dirt, you should treat them with CARBON PRO waterproofing spray before your first wear and after each wash. Afterwards, you can start looking at other care products.
When choosing shoe care products, it’s important to remember that some oils and creams will make leather shoes softer. This could cause safety shoes to lose some of their necessary stability. Wax-based products are an alternative in this case. (Please note: If your shoes have a special membrane like Gore-Tex, for example, you should avoid both oils and waxes because they will impair the material’s breathability.)
It’s important that shoes made of smooth leather, nubuk or suede are kept supple in order to protect them from tears or splits. RUSTICAL CLASSIC cream is well suited for use on this type of work shoe.
Regular Care = Safe Work Boots
You may think the biggest advantage of caring for your work shoes is that they stay looking presentable. However, it’s even more important that you immediately notice any signs of damage that could hinder your level of foot protection. Regular cleaning and care will help you do this.
When you clean the outside of your shoes, take the opportunity to also wash your laces. Check to see if there are any tears or worn spots and exchange them if necessary. Damaged laces can impede the safety functions of your shoes.
If you notice extreme signs of wear like the toe pulling away or stitching coming loose, it’s really time for a new pair. But until it comes to that, you can keep your work shoes clean, comfortable and safe with relatively little effort.

Waterproof or hydrophobic leather goods already have water protection built into their materials. This technology has been around for decades, but up until recently, it was only used for sturdy boots. Nowadays, thanks to improved production methods, there is also water-resistant leather available that looks elegant and light.
What is hydrophobic leather?
Hydrophobic leather is treated in such a way that it remains waterproof or water resistant for a long period of time. Therefore, it isn’t necessary to apply waterproofing spray before wearing shoes made of this type leather, unlike other leather shoes.
The leather becomes hydrophobic during the tanning process. There are numerous methods applied which use a combination of water-resistant chemicals, including paraffins, silicones and fluorine compounds. These chemicals bind to the fibres of the leather, thus raising its surface tension, which in turn prevents moisture from soaking in.
However, it’s important to note that not all hydrophobic leather is completely waterproof. Some is only water repellent. The difference between waterproof, water repellent and water resistant lies in the amount of time it takes before water makes its way through the fabric. As a rule, waterproof material stays dry longer than water repellent material.
What are the advantages of hydrophobic leather?
Hydrophobic leather is just as breathable as traditional leather, but it also has a number of additional advantages. Since the material repels water, it dries faster and ensures better thermal regulation. Waterproof leather also has a visual advantage: It doesn’t get water marks or spots.
Those of us who are less enthusiastic about cleaning will be delighted that dirt is less likely to permeate into hydrophobic material – and since the leather doesn’t get as wet, it holds its shape better. Waterproof leather also doesn’t dry out as quickly as traditional leather, which protects it from cracking or aging prematurely.
Do I need to care for waterproof leather?
Though it may sound like hydrophobic leather practically cleans and dries itself, every once and awhile it needs a little backup. The leather surface naturally gets worn after repetitive use and the initial waterproofing agents start breaking down. If this happens to you, it’s time to supplement with some care products and waterproofing spray. Our BAMBOO LOTION cleans the leather, yet helps it maintain its desired water resistance.
You may think you don’t need waterproofing spray for hydrophobic leather, but indeed you do. Over time, the coating on the hydrophobic fibres wears off. CARBON PRO is the ideal product to refresh and support the waterproofness of your shoes. You’ll get the most even results if you spray your shoe from 30cm away.
With regular refreshers, your new favourite footwear will be ready for any type of weather in upcoming seasons. Bring on the water and dirt!

There are few shoes out there that take as much abuse as children’s shoes do. Between the puddles, wet sand and brambles – things that adults tend to avoid and kids love – their shoes can easily end up in a rough state to say the least.
When that happens, there’s not much left to do other than to invest a bit of love, shoe polish and elbow grease and get those shoes shining once more. We grown-ups don’t mind cleaning up every now and then, but there are a few things to note when buying new shoes that could make our work a bit simpler.
Two pairs and a shoe horn
Even though little ones tend to outgrow their shoes at an astounding rate, it’s worth always buying two pairs at once. That way, your child can alternate which pair they wear, giving the shoe an occasional day’s rest and time to dry at room temperature. (Remember: Never try to dry shoes in the dryer. It will ruin each and every type of shoe).
Kids rarely exercise caution when putting on and taking off their shoes, and heels often start to show the impact of this. Enter shoe horns: Not only will the shoe be protected and kept intact, but your little ones will likely enjoy putting their shoes on with a tool.
Easy-to-clean leather shoes
In our era of abundance, children’s shoes, like adult’s, are now available in every colour, shape and material imaginable. When it comes to maintenance, however, smooth leather shoes still take the cake for easiest to clean (except for wellies perhaps). The smooth finish makes it harder for dirt and moisture to soak into the material. Paired with a good waterproofing spray, these are your best bet for longer-lasting children’s shoes.
With the wide range of shoe polish colours available today, you should have no problem making those shoes shine in high gloss. You may be pleasantly surprised by the number of colours featured in our SHOE CREAM and WATERSTOP COLOURS lines. Don’t see the exact tone you need? No problem. You can simply use the next lightest colour.
Wash children’s shoes in the washing machine
While children’s fabric shoes aren’t nearly as robust as leather shoes, they are machine washable, which is certainly an advantage. Hang on… can you really just toss shoes in the washing machine? We’ve heard that question before. If you use our SNEAKER WASH solution, you can finally be sure that you’re not going down the wrong path. Just make sure there isn’t any leather trim or other sensitive material on the shoe before washing it.
That doesn’t mean that mixed-material shoes aren’t suitable for children. They just require a bit more attention, especially when it comes to waterproofing and care. The CARBON PRO waterproofing spray is a high-performance treatment that can help make more sensitive materials completely impenetrable to moisture.
Always waterproof new shoes
You should always waterproof new kid’s shoes before the first wear. Very few brands are truly waterproof when you buy them off the shelf or online. Take note of the application instructions for the waterproofing treatment. It’s important to only use sprays when you’re outdoors or in well-circulated areas, especially if there are children in the house.
If you want to clean your shoes with your children (you can never start that habit too soon!) be sure to use mild cleaning and care products. Our organic line uses minimal chemicals and features up to 90% natural ingredients. Kids love taking out laces and putting them back in after cleaning!

Aon is a shoeshine specialist, shoe collector and an atypical character in Bangkok. Here he tells us why well-cared-for shoes are so important to him and why he is a fan of Collonil products.

Aon stands out amongst the lines of food stands, market stalls with metre-high piles of clothes, and the concert of beeping tuk tuks and cars on the busy streets of Bangkok, population: eight million and counting. While his fellow Thais tend to opt for functional runners, simple t-shirts and jeans in the best case, and sequined Hello Kitty ears in the worst, Aon catches your eye with his classic elegance.
The shoeshine specialist’s style makes it obvious that he’s a bit different; he looks as though he’s from another era. Aon values quality and attention to detail over knock-off name brand clothes, bright cartoon prints or worn runners. His fervour for finery doesn’t stop with his selection of clothes, however, it runs deeper; he isn’t just scratching the surface. You can get a good sense of this when Aon speaks about his passion for shoes or when he gets started on the merits of traditional Thai cuisine.
Striving for the perfect shoeshine
Aon endeavours to form long-term relationships with the people and objects in his life. As he puts it himself, he would like to ‘do things properly’. Thus, the 27-year-old shoe fanatic spends much of his free time searching out rare treasures in vintage shops and flea markets that he later meticulously restores and cares for. His collection ranges from leather shoes and bags to cameras and typewriters. Next to his other projects and interests, including running his pipe club and his band in which he plays drums, Aon has taken it upon himself to polish the footwear of Thailand’s capital city to a high lustre. The modern dandy – as he calls himself – is Bangkok’s one and only professional shoeshiner.
The man behind the Vulture Shoeshine Shop in Bangkok makes house calls to his clients. An exquisite collection of shoe waxes, leather cleaners and shoe polishes in a range of nuanced colours resides in his brown calf leather bag. He won’t settle for any one brand since he searches out the best of each product, however, he did briefly wax lyrical about Collonil’s line of products. ‘The large assortment of polish colours is particularly outstanding’, he said. According to Aon, his clients are ‘shoe snobs’, as is he, and thus they often speak exclusively about shoes. ‘Our passion for shoes connects us. They’re much more like friends than clients now. We exchange information and tips on how to perfectly polish a shoe’, said Aon, whose actual name is Prote Sakuntalak.

‘Clients from India always buy the same shoes’
Aon’s customers are primarily businessmen from outside of Thailand who boast large collections of high-quality leather shoes in their wardrobes at home. He floats away into a dream world just thinking about them. He counts 25 pairs of sleek leather shoes as his own. The majority of his collection are leather loafers and oxfords. He discovered his favourite pair in a second hand shop. They’re ‘Made in Germany’, but he can’t decipher the manufacturer name since the inner lining is so well worn.
Is there a difference in the way clients from different countries and cultures handle their shoes? ‘Yes, definitely!’, Aon cried out. ‘My clients from India, for example, wear the same shoes every day and have only a few pairs. Then they call me at least every two months in desperate need of my advice and service. Some wear their shoes out completely and then buy the same ones new again’, explained the shoe aficionado.
The streets of Bangkok: A shoe’s worst nightmare
Apparently his French clients are the total opposite. They have sizeable collections of shoes and know how to take care of them. They also change their footwear at least three times a week. ‘Funnily enough’, he said, ‘the French always wear brown shoes. No one has been able to tell me why that is’. On the other hand, Japanese businessmen in Bangkok are too busy to take care of their shoes. Thus, Aon is responsible for much of their shoe care.
His own people? They like wearing runners and black shoes that will go with anything. ‘Thais will buy a nice pair of shoes for special occasions, but not necessarily for work’, said Aon. Many – especially men – buy their first pair of fine shoes for their own wedding. A good pair of leather shoes is an expensive luxury item for most people in Thailand. After all, they’re a little less than practical on the hot, dusty and bumpy streets of Bangkok.
Show me your shoes and I’ll tell you…
A typical pair of leather shoes costs around 10,000 baht (approx. 270 euro) in Thailand. Aon recommends individuals spend nearly twice that on a nicer pair so they can pass their treasured footwear onto their children and grandchildren. He suggests wearing a shoe with a rubber sole for daily use around Bangkok and believes in using shoe trees rather than newspaper for storage. He relies on wax and polish in nuanced colours to get the perfect shine. ‘Begin a little lighter, and then go darker’, he recommends. ‘Especially as the colour begins to change over time’.
Regularly nourishing your leather shoes will keep them moist and supple and help guarantee they enjoy a long life, just like human skin. Moreover, ‘take a look at a man’s shoes, and you’ll have an idea of how he treats his wife’, laughed Aon, shoe polisher, modern dandy and a true gentleman who adds a touch of style and stoic thoughtfulness to our fast-paced world.

Faux leather goes by a few different names: synthetic leather, pleather or artificial leather. Some companies even have their own proprietary name for it. At the start of the 20th century, as more and more cost-efficient leather alternatives started to be developed, faux leather became the first choice for many designer goods as well as ever more popular vegan shoes and clothing.
What’s the difference between faux leather and genuine leather?
Genuine leather is a natural material made from tanned animal hide. Faux leather, on the other hand, is comprised of a textile base that is coated with a PVC or polyurethane outer layer. You’ll often find faux leather being used for seat cushions in public transport even though it is less durable than genuine leather. While genuine leather isn’t as easy to clean, it handles scratches and signs of wear better – they simply add to its character. In comparison, faux leather is more likely to tear or flake. Many synthetic leathers also lack in breathability, meaning your feet are more likely to sweat when they’re tucked into faux leather shoes. If the option is available, try to purchase microperforated faux leather shoes, which are much more breathable. One of the biggest advantages of faux leather is its lack of water sensitivity. Some types can even be thrown into the washing machine, whereas genuine leather would be ruined in the wash. Faux leather shoes are also naturally more water resistant than genuine leather shoes, even before you apply waterproofing treatments, and they retain their true colour better.
  Faux leather care
Surface-level dirt can be removed with a soft bristle brush like the CLEANING BRUSH . But what should you do for a more substantial clean? It’s often not enough to simply wipe faux leather with a damp cloth and household cleaner or washing up liquid; a faux leather cleaner, which cleans and conditions, is much better suited. If you don’t take care of your faux leather shoes or boots, they’ll likely break down much faster. Residues from your skin, creams and lotions can damage the plasticiser, or softener, in the synthetic coating. If you don’t remove the residue, the faux leather will become brittle and less flexible. SYNCARE CLASSIC conditioning foam conditions the faux leather and helps maintain its elasticity. Treating your faux leather boots or shoes with CARBON PRO will also help prevent water and dirt from soaking into the material. If you regularly clean and condition your faux leather footwear, you’ll enjoy a much longer life together.

Nina is always on the go, and usually on four wheels. She rides her skateboard to university, around town and at the skatepark in the evenings. She also plays basketball, holds down a part-time job in a burger bar and enjoys a good night out. In short: Nina is rarely at home, leaving her little time to fuss over taking care of her shoes and clothes.
Odour elimination made easy
In addition to her skateboard, there’s another accessory Nina won’t leave the house without: her favourite hat. The grey corduroy cap from DC Shoes was a birthday gift from her best friend. Nina rarely takes it off, yet somehow it still looks in decent shape. Inside is another story, however. Every time she wears it, the hat absorbs sweat and oil from her skin and inevitably builds a hefty stench. Nina wishes she could just throw her cap and leather sneakers into the wash, but it’s not that simple. Same goes for her sport bag that rapidly absorbs the smell of sweaty t-shirts and wet towels. No need to worry, however, now there’s an effective solution for fighting odours: BREEZE odour neutraliser. BREEZE refreshens hats, bags, shoes and jackets. It doesn’t just mask one scent with another, but rather contains an innovative active ingredient that bonds with odour-causing molecules, preventing the release of unpleasant smells. BREEZE works best with damp or sweaty articles as the active agent is moisture activated. The earlier you apply the fabric refresher, the better since BREEZE stops odour-causing bacteria from taking hold in the first place. Your clothes won’t be left reeking of perfume afterwards either. BREEZE leaves things smelling like fresh laundry. The compact spray canister fits easily into any bag and works right-side up and upside down; a practical feature for spraying shoes. Applying BREEZE only takes 30 seconds, making it the perfect solution for those of us like Nina who don’t have loads of time to devote to removing odours from our belongings.
Remove odours on the go
Since using BREEZE , Nina has stopped worrying whether her clothes are giving off bad odours. She’s much more relaxed and has learned that the spray not only works wonders against sweat, but also gets rid of cigarette smoke, greasy food smells and pet odours from her cat Mao. BREEZE takes care of business, just like Nina on her skateboard.

As the winter fades into spring there is little that can keep outdoor fans cooped up indoors any longer. Nature is calling, and cool temperatures and unexpected spring showers are par for the course. As the saying goes, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing”. But what exactly is appropriate outdoor clothing? For one, it needs to shield against cold, rain and wind, and yet it still needs to be breathable. No wonder practical functional clothing has become the standard in nearly all outdoor sporting activities.
Membranes and DWR Coating: How They Work

Functional hydrophobic textiles feature an internal semipermeable membrane that allows excess body heat to escape and sweat to evaporate whilst block ing external moisture from entering. Closed cell membranes like Sympatex®, for instance, function via osmosis, whereas microporous hydrophobic membranes like Gore-Tex® only allow small water vapour molecules to pass.
However, these membranes aren’t the sole contributors to outdoor clothing’s waterproofness. Most functional clothing is coated with a thin outer layer of polyurethane. This so-called durable water repellent (DWR) prevents sportswear from getting soaked through by external moisture which prevents heat exchange from taking place.
Regular wear and laundering gradually breaks down even the most robust water-repellent coating. If you’re regularly freezing because your outer layer is soaking through and pulling all the heat away from your body, or condensation is starting to build up inside your outdoor wear, it’s time to make some changes.

Refresh Your Hydrophobic Coating: Heat or Water-Repellent Sprays
Your well-worn sportswear may be far from water-repellent now, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to throw it in the bin. The first step in refreshing your clothes’ hydrophobic coating is to pop them in the dryer or iron them on a low heat setting. Make sure to place a towel over the clothing for protection before ironing. If these measures don’t seem to impact the water-resistance, try applying the UNIVERSAL PROTECTOR spray or OUTDOOR SPORT PROOF for a refreshed layer of protection. Follow this rule of thumb: Less is more. Applying a series of thin layers is more effective than drenching your sportswear with the spray.
Easier Still with Water Repellent Detergent
Another option is using detergent-based hydrophobic coating. Select a delicate laundry cycle without spinning and add OUTDOOR WASH IN PROTECTOR to the fabric softener compartment. Make sure you avoid using any traditional fabric softener as it tends to clog membrane fibres and hinder fabric breathability. You should likewise stay away from normal laundry detergents, particularly powdered detergents, as they weaken the surface-active agents of the wash-in water-repellent detergent. Powdered soaps clog microporous membranes and roughen the material’s surface. Instead, try using OUTDOOR TEXTILE WASH for a gentle clean that maintains both the breathability and functionality of semipermeable membranes. Regular treatment and laundering will help prevent buildup of sweat and dirt from negatively impacting your outdoor clothing. As long as your sportswear is well coated, the occasional shower won’t rain on your sport parade.

Your shoes get put through a lot – moisture, extremes in weather, physical strain – each and every wear taxes the materials. If you want your favourites to stay looking impeccable even after multiple wears, you must practise regular care. We aren’t only talking about the use of creams, brushes and polish. Proper care begins with proper shoe storage; in a shoe box or shoe bag, for example. This could well be considered “passive shoe care”, since all you really have to do is avoid a few of the classic mistakes. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
Shoe Horns: Care from the Very First Moment
He who loves his footwear uses a shoe horn to put on his shoes each and every time. Shoe horns not only aid in putting on the shoe itself, but also help prevent unattractive wrinkles or bulges from forming at the heel. What’s more, shoe horns preserve seams and protect sensitive materials like leather from getting scratched. Whether plastic, metal or wooden, a shoe horn is essential.
That Bit of Extra Support: Shoe Trees and Shoe Stretchers
So you wandered over hill and dale and your shoes are worse for wear? Not to worry, that’s what shoe trees, also known as shoe stretchers or shoe formers, are for. These supportive inserts ensure frustrating lines and wrinkles don’t settle into the leather. When placed after wear, a plastic or wooden shoe tree will return the shoe to its original shape. Let’s be honest, wrinkles really only look cute when they’re on a pug’s face. When found on shoes, however, wrinkles are unattractive. Moreover, unaddressed creases can eventually lead to tears or fissures in the leather. Not even the best shoemaker around can bring torn shoes back to life.
Our feet produce a considerable amount of moisture throughout the day. When you place a shoe tree in your shoe immediately after taking it off, it encourages airflow and prevents the leather from losing its shape while drying out.
Choosing the Appropriate Shoe Tree for Your Shoe
Is every shoe tree suited to every shoe? Not a chance! You should pay attention to a few parameters when selecting the right one for your shoe. An ill-selected shoe tree can mean both wasted money and permanent damage to your shoes. We recommend using a shoe tree made of unfinished wood for men’s shoes.
Cedar wood shoe trees are particularly advantageous as they simultaneously discourage unsavoury aromas from taking hold. One such model is the EXCELLENCE men’s screw shoe tree, which can be adjusted to fit the length of your shoe and supports both the toe and heel. The linear structure of the tree prevents the toe from gradually curling upwards, what’s come to be known as the dreaded Aladdin toe.
Shoe Trees and Boot Stretchers: Specialists That Pack a Punch
Shoe care is just as important when you’re on the road. Before you set out, be sure to pack a set of BASIC SOFTFORMERS . They are light as a feather, easy to use and most importantly, they prevent creases from forming on your footwear when they’re packed snugly in your suitcase.
Are you more of a boot person? Try supporting your favourite pair with a set of FORMERS for high-boots after each wear. Not only are they easy to insert, but they’ll also stop the leather from being damaged by bending or creasing. The functional FORMERS for low-boots work perfectly to hold the shape of your trendy ankle boots. The real cherry on top is: Both type of FORMERS feature hooks that allow the boots to be hung, saving valuable space on your shoe rack and relieving your boots of some extra pressure.
As a rule of thumb, you should always buy a shoe tree sized appropriately to each shoe; otherwise, the shoe could become grossly misshapen. Beware of the so-called unisex shoe tree! Men’s and ladies’ shoes vary vastly in shape, as do the feet that wear them. A shoe requires a shoe tree suited to its individual nature. That’s precisely why Collonil has developed products such as the CHIC & LIGHTS with grip foam shoe tree that is specially designed for ladies’ high heels.
Give Your Shoes a Break
Those of us hard at work need a breather every now and again – the same goes for our shoes. Try not to wear the same pair two days in a row if possible, and allow your shoes 24 hours to recover after each wear. Be kind to your footwear and you will enjoy a long life of days and nights out on the town together.
Be sure to use your shoes’ respite days for more active shoe care. You can find more tips, videos and our current promotions and sales in our monthly newsletter.

Many of us dream of it: Taking a breather after graduation or a career break and setting out to explore the world, spending months or years hopping from Canada to LA, Hawaii, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Bali and Thailand, and more. Just you and as much as you can carry on your back. This was certainly a dream of mine and it finally became a reality around the time of my 30th birthday.
Of course, a world tour doesn’t happen spontaneously. My endless to-do list of preparations included planning my route, booking flights, sorting out accommodation, finding someone to rent my room and getting all the proper vaccines. This list kept me busy full-time for two months.
How to fit a full wardrobe into a backpack?
When it finally came time to pack my belongings, I began to panic. Not only because it meant it was time to say goodbye to friends, family and my bed for a long time, but also because I knew I’d have to radically reduce my wardrobe!
I was planning to be on the road for five months, travelling from a chilly autumn in Canada to tropical Bali during monsoon season. I obviously needed to pack wet and warm gear, but my pack couldn’t weigh more than 15 kg or I’d have difficulty carrying it. Without a doubt, the hardest part was choosing which shoes to bring.
Backpacking checklist: Which shoes should I bring?
I wanted to bring shoes that would be suited to all types of situations. I needed footwear that was warm and robust enough to withstand treks on rough terrain. I also needed something that looked decent so I could make appearances in the great metropoles of the world and possibly a few posh clubs. And I wanted something light, airy and easy to take care of for long walks on the beach. I found it very challenging to winnow down my choices.
But tough decisions had to be made. I ended up packing two pairs of sandals, one pair of sneakers and my lime green moccasins. Yes, that’s right: lime green, light colour, completely unpractical – but I love them! I hoped that bringing along CARBON COMPLETE , the all-round cleaner from Collonil, would help make sure they returned home in fair shape. The cleaning foam is meant to protect, clean and even waterproof your shoes. You can see and read for yourself how my moccasins withstood the adventures to come:

First stop: Shoes as fresh as Niagara Falls

Welcome to Canada. I made sure my favourite summer shoes were looking smart before my five-month trip. I treated them with Collonil’s CARBON PRO waterproofing spray to be on the safe side. Here we are posing together at Niagara Falls. Of course, they’re no longer the newest shoes on the block – they’ve already survived three summers in Germany – but they’re my favourite pair and so comfortable, perfect for city tours and day trips. Plus, I could even get away with wearing them in the evening to restaurants and clubs around the world.

Next stop: Chuck Norris doesn’t worry about dirt

They also pounded the pavement at Los Angeles’ Walk of Fame. I’m sure Chuck Norris doesn’t clean his shoes. The dirt wouldn’t dare go anywhere near them! The same could be said for my shoes after they are cleaned with CARBON COMPLETE . My moccasins were beaming in LA; the first four weeks of travel didn’t put a dent in them, and that’s despite their ‘unpractical’ light colour. Obviously, darker shoes are a bit better suited for long trips, but I love a good challenge!

Next stop: Hill climbing and deep clean Fiji-style

After a short stop on Hawaii, I landed in Fiji paradise. The endless empty beaches, stunning coral reefs and tropical flora certainly left an strong impression. However, I didn’t just laze away my days on the beach; I was somehow convinced to go hill climbing. Of course, we went at a nice and easy pace, since we were on ‘Fiji time’ as the locals like to describe their lifestyle. If I had known what awaited me and my moccasins, however, I would have left them to rest in my bungalow and opted for my sneakers. After an 800-metre climb in 1.5 hours on jungle paths and across rocky ledges, it became clear that the local guide wasn’t taking it easy on us. For the first time on this trip, my shoes were looking worse for wear.
But the walk was worth it. In the end, we had a fantastic view over the island where ‘Cast Away’ with Tom Hanks was filmed. My poor footwear reminded me of beat-up Wilson, Tom Hank’s volleyball companion in the film. Not to worry, however, back on the beach I gave them a thorough clean and took some time for deep relaxation in a hammock.

Next stop: In with the persnickety Hobbits

After their deep clean, my moccasins were once again ready to be seen in civilisation. Off we went to visit the tidy Hobbits in New Zealand. The furry-footed creatures don’t allow just anyone to enter into their tiny hobbit homes, but we made the cut! Following our foray in Hobbiton, I decide it was time to give my trusted footwear a well-deserved break. Wellies did the job during my time working on a farm.
While the first days of spring in New Zealand were still relatively chilly, summertime temperatures in Sydney called for my brand new flip flops. However, after a few hours of walking around the city on hot asphalt, the sandals were quite literally falling apart at the seams. I kept wearing them, but unfortunately paid the price: weeks later my feet were still covered in painful blisters. Take note: Test your shoes out at home, don’t travel with a new pair that you haven’t broken in yet!

Next stop: Asian surpris

Asia took me by surprise. Rubbish-covered beaches, dirty streets, hostels filled with dogs that snatch and chew your shoes at night – wow. But I found serenity, or ‘sabar’ as the locals call it, in Bali. There, peacefulness is a whole way of life. I’d learned by then that Collonil had my back and would get my sensitive moccasins back into shape. Both pairs of my flip flops had by then found their way into rubbish bins, but my moccasins were still going strong!

Last stop: Bangkok – shoes are shining again!

The cherry on top of it all was when shoeshine specialist Aon from Bangkok’s Vulture Shoeshine got his hands on my favourite pair of moccasins. He polished them till they looked new. Afterwards, we could both head home glowing and enjoy a few more summer days together in Germany, and maybe even another trip around the world!

What did I learn on the world tour?
A trip around the world opens new horizons and will certainly teach you a few lessons along the way. Remember to stay calm when something doesn’t go according to plan, learn to constantly adjust to new people and situations, go with the flow, be forgiving with yourself and others and don’t expect everything to go perfectly. Looking back, I acted and looked very German at the start of my trip. After five months without a haircut, wearing the same clothes and countless bumps and bruises, I’ve learned to be more at ease with my external appearance.
But there is one thing I’ll never learn to compromise with: my shoes. I was so happy that I brought CARBON COMPLETE with me on my travels. It lasted for exactly five months and was the easiest and lightest solution to keep my beloved moccasins, sneakers and leather purse clean and cared for. You really don’t need anything else to make a polished appearance as a well-travelled backpacker.

The best way to dry wet shoes is packing them with newspaper. It takes a little extra time, but it’s the most gentle method and won’t damage the material. If you don’t have any newspaper on hand, kitchen roll or another absorbent material will also work.
Fill your wet shoes completely with paper. Make sure you to pay attention to the shoe shape. Leather is a natural material and can dent and warp easily. Set the filled shoes on a few extra sheets of newspaper in a warm, well-ventilated room.
After a while if the shoes aren’t dry and the paper inside feels damp, replace it and leave them rest a bit longer. It may take one or two days for your shoes to dry completely.
When Time Is an Issue - Electric Shoe Drying
If you’re in a rush, an electric shoe dryer may be exactly what you need. Electric shoe dryers use a heat source to warm air and direct it into the shoe or warm the air already inside the shoe. Both types of dryer will reliably get rid of excess moisture. Shoe dryers are particularly popular in winter sports for drying ski or snowboard boots.
However, the speed comes at a cost. When using electric shoe dryers, it’s important to follow the user instructions carefully in order to avoid damaging your shoes. We don’t recommend using electric shoe dryers on sensitive leather shoes, for example.
Radiators, Hairdryers and Ovens – Not Recommended for Drying Shoes
Though these methods may appear convenient, we don’t recommend drying wet shoes directly on radiators, in the oven or with a hairdryer. Leather or synthetic materials may become brittle and crack from strong direct heat exposure. This sort of damage is often irreversible.
Don’t Forget to Nourish Your Shoes After Drying
Once your shoes are dry, it’s time to get to work with shoe care. Water extracts vital nutrients from leather, leaving the material feeling dry and rough. Coloured polish helps replenish the material and refresh the colour. Be sure to use polish suitable for each respective type of leather. We recommend using WATERSTOP COLOURS for smooth leather and NUBUK & TEXTILE for suede.
To maintain the texture of suede or rough leather, make sure to use a CREPE BRUSH after applying the cream or polish. That way you’ll avoid leaving spots and preserve the overall look.
Leather can become misshapen while drying. If this happens, we recommend using the FORMA shoe tree to help it return to its original shape. In the event that unpleasant odours take hold, use the SHOE DEO SEA BREEZE to get things smelling fresh again.
Rain is certain to fall again so it’s best to take preventative measures and waterproof your shoes with CARBON PRO . Not only does this protect the surface of the shoe, but dirt and moisture won’t be able to soak into the material as easily – and if you feel so inclined, you can always test it out by splashing in a puddle.

Before tucking your winter shoes away for spring and summer, make sure to give them a thorough clean and polish. That way, the leather won’t dry out and your favourite cold weather shoes will be ready to wear as soon as the next winter approaches. Pay attention to the requirements of specific materials, because smooth leather and suede don’t always tolerate the same products.
  Begin with Cleaning and Waterproofing
If your shoes have a rough surface, begin by cleaning them with a CLEANING BRUSH to get rid of any major dirt and dust. You should skip this step if you’re dealing with more sensitive smooth leather. It’s important to give both types of leather a moist clean to remove salt and snow rings. Use SHAMPOO DIRECT to tackle any deeper stains. CLEAN & CARE and CARBON CLEANING FOAM are another products that offers a deep clean, yet is gentle on your shoes. Place your shoes away from direct heat sources and allow them to dry completely before applying any waterproofing treatments. WATERSTOP CLASSIC is the perfect choice for smooth leather. SPECIAL WAX is better suited for use with nappa, aniline and antique leathers. The NUBUK + VELOURS waterproofing spray works well with suede shoes or boots.
  Polish Before Storing
Shoes can easily dry out in storage. The result is brittle, cracked leather. You need to properly care for the leather to make sure its colour and texture are maintained throughout the summer months. Use 1909 LEATHER CREAM to keep fine smooth leather soft and supple. WATERSTOP COLOURS is another great product to nourish leather whilst also giving coloured leather a refreshing boost. The best product to use with suede is the liquid NUBUK + TEXTILE . It’s important to maintain the velvety texture of suede during care. Both the CREPE BRUSH and NUBUK BOX help ensure you don’t flatten the material during treatment.
Shapely and Protected - Shoe Trees and Storage
Last, but not least, you should use suitable shoe trees to help maintain your shoes’ proper shape and prevent wrinkles from forming. The FORMER for high boots is perfect for stabilising the shaft of taller winter boots. The boot FORMER also has a hanging device that allows you to store your boots on a clothes rail, etc. Be sure you don’t stack your shoes on top of one another; it’s important to store each pair individually. Fabric storage bags are space saving and breathable. Shoe boxes are more stable and can also allow leather to breathe if the lid is left slightly ajar or the box features air vents.

Whether you’re out for a Christmas stroll or cosy at home on the sofa, sheepskin boots belong to winter as much as mulled wine and Christmas crackers. Better known as ugg boots, they are great for keeping your feet warm during the coldest season of the year. But not only that, they’re also trendy! Ever since Hollywood stars like Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio started wearing them in the early 2000’s, uggs have been a staple of fashionable footwear.
  From Sheepskin to Ugg Boot
Who would’ve thought that the name of the most iconic sheepskin boot has unattractive roots? Supposedly, an Australian man by the name of Frank Mortels from Mortels Sheepskin Factory coined the term ‘ugg boot’ in 1958, after his wife called the first sheepskin shoes ugly. Thus, this type of boot was called ‘ugg’ long before the American brand name UGG (in capitals) was established as a protected name around the world.
This type of footwear has been made in Australia since the 1930s. They were originally worn by surfers to keep their feet warm during competitions. The boots eventually made their way to other countries through the sport. In 1995, Deckers Outdoor Corporation started producing them in the US under the name UGG Australia. Ever since, there has been conflict between Deckers and Australian manufacturers about the term ‘ugg’. Is it a protected brand name or a general term?
The Winter Boot That Wasn’t
The classic ugg is a slip-on boot with a mid-level shaft. It is made of light brown lambskin (or sheepskin), features a synthetic sole made of ethylene-vinyl acetate and external accent stitching. The shoe or boot is suede on the outside and has thick, soft fleece in the inside, which is perfect for regulating foot temperature. That’s why your feet are able to stay nice and cool in summer and extra warm in winter.
Nowadays, the boots are available in a wide range of colours and shapes and feature stylish extras such as buttons, glitter or sequins.
Ugg boots are really best suited for wear indoors. The material is soft, shows signs of wear easily and is very water absorbent. If you insist on wearing them outdoors during the winter months, however, know that they require intensive care!
How to Care for Ugg Boots
The first thing you should do is waterproof your uggs to ensure they last a long time – and don’t forgot to refresh the treatment every so often! FASHION BOOTS waterproofing spray from Collonil is specially designed for use on sheepskin boots. It is the perfect product for overall boot care. Not only does it protect them from water, snow and salt stains, but it also nourishes the material with oils to replenish the suede and enrich the colour. You should avoid using shoe polish or liquid shoe products with uggs as it’s hard to distribute evenly.
If you have light surface-level stains, try using the NUBUK BOX . It is a dry cleaning product that roughens the suede and prevents spots and smudges from setting. If your boots require a deeper wet clean, we recommend Collonil BAMBOO LOTION . It’s perfect for getting rid of dirt and nourishes the material with bamboo extract. Spray it directly on the boots and brush the dirt away with a CLEANING BRUSH and your uggs will look like new!

Every trek through the mountains is an adventure for kids, especially when you take them on interesting trails beyond wide, cleared forest paths. They like to discover nature on snakey routes, rocky climbs and off-road explorations – and if a stream or two crosses their path, all the better! However, adventures like these do demand quite a bit when it comes to cleaning and caring for kids hiking boots.
Waterproofing: Extra protection for young explorers
Before heading out on a trip, you should give your children's hiking shoes a solid waterproofing treatment. As you know, your kids won’t pass on any opportunity to splash in a puddle or walk straight through a stream. Mud and muck are also tempting places for children’s feet to explore. Instead of constantly reprimanding your children to keep their boots dry, simply treat their footwear with a quality waterproofing spray. The treatment will also make the boots easier to clean later on.
Kids hiking boots are typically made of a combination of light mesh and suede. Many also include a Gore-Tex membrane or similar water-resistant material. Make sure to use waterproofing spray that is suitable for these materials (i.e. SPORT PROOF ).
Kids hiking boots: Cleaning made easy
If your little adventurers fall into bed exhausted, mucky hiking boots cast into a corner somewhere not to be found till morning, there’s no need to panic. Even if the dirt and mud has dried, you can apply specialised cleaner (e.g. OUTDOOR CLEANER ) to the suede with a brush and the rest nearly takes care of itself.
If, despite your best efforts, their hiking boots do manage to get wet during a trek, remove the inner soles and stuff the boots full of absorbent paper to soak up excess moisture. Do your best to keep your kids hiking boots warm and dry; that way, they are less likely to develop unpleasant odours.
Children’s hiking boots smell too
In midsummer, when temperatures are at their peak, even kids shoes can start to stink. To make sure your children can don their hiking boots for the next trek without wrinkling their noses, treat their shoes with a shoe deodorant. No scents will remain in the way of your next adventure.
Ute Watzl, age 41, loves exploring in the mountains, whether by foot, mountain bike or skis. For the past few years, she’s been bringing her children along with her. She is the family group leader for the German Alpine Association and blogs about her mountain experiences at: www.zwerg-am-berg.de (in German).

Nubuk and velours are subsumed under the term rough leather. Typical for rough leather is its velvety touch that is achieved by sanding its surface. The result of this procedure is a nice structure and a pleasant, warm grip. Although nubuk and velours appear quite similar by the end of their manufacturing process, the process itself is significantly different. With nubuk, the grained side – meaning the outer side of the leather – is sanded which leaves a fine flor. The grained pattern is still visible. Roughening the leather makes it more breathable which is, however, not exclusively positive. The leather´s rough surface is more sensitive to dirt, grease and (sun)light which causes the colours to fade. There are two kinds of velours leather: The flesh-split (lower layer) and the grain-split (upper layer). Typical for the flesh-split is its velvety haptics on both sides while the grain split has velours only on one side. The other side is the actual grain surface. Velours leather is extremely robust and breathable and is therefore often used for working boots and gloves.

Canvas shoes are light, comfortable and give your foot a slim appearance. They barely add any weight to your holiday bags and you can even wear them barefoot. All in all, fabric shoes are the perfect summer footwear companions.
If only there wasn’t any dirt around. Dirt and dust seem to easily find their way into the material of cloth shoes, but it’s not so easy to get back out. We’ll show you what to do to make sure you and your canvas favourites enjoy another few seasons together.
Cleaning Canvas Shoes – A Matter of Brushing
The easiest and most important step in cleaning canvas shoes is so simple that we often ask ourselves: Why doesn’t everyone do this? Take a CLEANING BRUSH and brush off dust, sand and other dirt clinging to the shoe surface. Voilà! It’s best to brush your shoes after each and every wear, since dirt can’t be absorbed by the material if it isn’t left lingering on the surface.
If the dirt has already settled into the fabric (this happens as soon as moisture is involved), it’s not a deal breaker. The mild cleansing lotion BAMBOO LOTION will loosen the dirt and the sturdy bristles of the CLEANING BRUSH will help remove it from every nook and cranny.
Waterproof Canvas Shoes – Preventative Measures Are Better Than Cleaning
This simple cleaning method will brighten even the whitest shoes. But if we’re honest, it might be better to skip all of the scrubbing and frequently waterproof your shoes instead. (When we say frequently, we mean more frequently than you waterproof leather shoes). Applying a protective layer like VARIO SPRAY not only keeps moisture away, but it also fends off dirt.
Washing Canvas Shoes – Easy Trick or a No-Go?
In terms of vulnerability, canvas shoes have one leg up on leather shoes: They can handle wet washing. SNEAKER WASH is a special Collonil product that is well suited for just that. Mix the recommended handwashing dose with warm water and clean your shoes with a sponge or towel.
You could also pop your canvas shoes into the washing machine. You might think it’s awful for your shoes, but it’s not if you make sure they are washable and you closely follow the care instructions. Washing your footwear at 30°C and using a spin cycle of max. 600 shouldn’t damage normal shoes. However, if your pair include leather bits or special decorations, you’re better off avoiding the wash.
Before putting your shoes into the washing machine, make sure to remove any loose parts such as laces or insoles and wash those separately. To protect your shoes during spin cycles, toss them into the SNEAKER WASH washing bag. Adding a few towels to the load also works as a good buffer. Afterwards, dry your shoes at room temperature.
Barefoot in Canvas Shoes – Do It Hygienically
Those who wear cloth shoes barefoot shouldn’t only be worried about dirt and muck gathering on the outside of their footwear. Sweat-moistened shoe interiors are beloved spots for bacteria to take hold and start smelling. Use INSIDE FRESH & CLEAN after every wear and the insides of your shoes will be as clean as a freshly laundered t-shirt.

It was love at first sight through the display window: You and your cognac-coloured strappy sandals. You were a perfect fit and enjoyed fabulous strolls along the promenade together. Now that your holidays are over and you’ve returned to the daily grind, is your summer shoe affair over? Or are you looking for more? If so, you may want to invest a bit more in the relationship.
Clean your sandals, protect your straps
Sandals often feature minimal amounts of leather, but it’s still important to clean and take care of it. 1909 LEATHER LOTION provides leather with nourishing oils and moisture, which help keep the material flexible. That’s good news considering the strain those thin bits of leather are placed under, especially near holes and buckles. Keep the instep hygienic and fresh Don’t ignore the instep either. Clothes and accessories that directly contact the skin require more frequent washing. The same goes for sandal insteps. In an ideal world, you’d clean your sandals after every wear. If you do clean them frequently, it’s best to use a mild cleanser that will clean the instep without irritating your skin. We recommend INSIDE FRESH & CLEAN shoe interior cleanser.
Insoles make sandals more comfortable
Regular cleaning isn’t the only way to protect the interior of your favourite summer sandals. There are finally quality comfort sandal insoles available. The SISTER PIPPA STYLE insoles are extra thin and adhere straight to the instep of your sandal. What’s in it for you? Well, your sandals will feel softer and more comfy. The walking surface will feel smooth and dry and your sandal instep will be protected from dirt – and the summery designs are an eye-catcher!and they have a trendy summer look!

Nappa leather is the general term for particularly soft, chrome tanned smooth leather of all animal skin types and fields of use. A distinction is made between natural, slightly pigmented, pigmented and sanded leather.Natural nappa leather is also known as aniline leather. It is open-pored and imbued with aniline colourants.
Aniline leather – flawless, precious and very sensitive
The natural characteristics of the skin material are well visible because they are not covered by paints and coatings. Therefore, the leather must not be damaged by tick bites, thorn scratches or other external causes. For this reason, this immaculate material is often very precious and expensive.
Aniline leathers are extremely sensitive to dirt and fat, as well as to bleaching out caused by sunlight due to the fact that the leather´s pores are not sealed. Just like aniline leather, slightly pigmented nappa leather is dyed through with water-soluble colourants to which pigments were added which makes the material more resistant to light and abrasion. Additionally, the surface appears to be more even.
A colour coat makes nappa even and insensitive
Both kinds of nappa leather are water-vapour permeable and therefore provide an excellent heat exchange. With pigmented nappa leather, colourants are applied firmly to the grained leather´s surface by using a binding agent. This makes the material less breathable but at the same time easier to clean and less sensitive to dirt.
Nappa leather that has been sanded on the grained side gets an extremely smooth surface when colourants are applied. Its particularly natural features are almost lost completely by this process.

Beloved by women and men alike, these summer shoes make you feel like you’re on holidays in the Mediterranean. We’re talking about espadrilles, of course. You probably remember them from your childhood, but they’ve been making regular comebacks since the 80s.
Espadrilles originated in Spain and the South of France, where the grass that was initially used for their plaited soles naturally grows. Of course, it’s this natural grass sole that makes these shoes extra vulnerable to dirt and moisture.
Canvas, leather, jute: How to clean sensitive materials
While the soles of most espadrilles are now more robust thanks to rubber bases, the fabric uppers are another story. Usually made of canvas, linen or leather, uppers can range from light to dark colours, as well as feature exciting prints or even sequins, all of which require special care.
If your espadrilles do get wet or dirty, it’s important to clean them straight away and give them plenty of time to dry. Afterwards, you can take a few simple steps to prevent your favourite summer shoes from getting soiled again.
Cleaning fabric shoes: Less is more
A good rule of thumb is: Avoid getting your espadrilles too wet when cleaning them. The moisture will inevitably penetrate the sole, which is extremely slow to dry. An even worse idea is to throw them in the wash as they are unlikely to survive any cycle.
The first step for cleaning any shoe material is to use a CLEANING BRUSH to get rid of sand, dust and other surface-level dirt. Then apply CLEAN & CARE CLASSIC cleaning foam to remove stains and smudges. Make sure you allow the fabric to dry completely before the next wear, otherwise your shoe may lose its shape. White canvas shoes may be left in the sun to dry, but coloured varieties should be shaded to avoid bleaching.
Caring for leather espadrilles
Leather espadrilles are popular on cooler summer days. Most cleaning products will strip leather not only of dirt, but also oils that are essential for keeping the material soft and supple. CLEAN & CARE CLASSIC cleaning foam contains additional active ingredients that nourish leather. It is thus suitable for use with smooth leather as well as more traditional espadrilles fabrics.
Dirt doesn’t just collect on the outside of shoes, of course, but also the inside. INSIDE FRESH & CLEAN is perfectly suited for cleaning shoe interiors. It’s easy to forget to clean the insides of your espadrilles and sandals, but trust us, your feet will thank you if you do!
Treated soles = dry espadrilles
Once you’ve cleaned your espadrilles and let them dry, you can work on addressing the issue of the sensitive jute sole. Best case scenario: You never let the woven grass soles get wet since they typically take several days to dry completely.
Of course, sometimes rain or rising tides come as a surprise. That’s why it’s a good idea to waterproof your soles just in case. We recommend the high-tech waterproof spray CARBON PRO . It is suitable for all types of fabrics, including canvas uppers and jute soles. Treatment not only protects shoes from water damage, but also keeps dirt from setting. CARBON PRO will still allow the fabric of your espadrilles to breathe, however, meaning you’ll still get that light and airy feeling on your feet all summer long!

Hip, hip hooray –springtide has come! Away with the thick winter coats and off to the cellar with them! Now is the time to get out the sexy leather jackets and to greet the first rays of the spring sun. What could be cooler than a high quality vintage leather jacket combined with a hip pair of pilot’s spectacles in shimmering bright colours?
The trend in the spring and summer of 2015 keeps one warm on cool nights and nestles against one like a second skin. Everyone makes a lasting impression in the proper leather jacket. Cool and nonetheless timeless – once one has found one’s dream model, one will glean pleasure from it for one’s whole life!
Whether in biker-look, studded or an elegant model as an alternative to the blazer in the office – the good old leather jacket is as versatile as no other item of clothing. And it joins in with just about any type of fun. These hot items only reveal their true character over the course of time, however. After having been worn a few times they ingratiate themselves to an ever-increasing degree and become softer.
Leather jackets in Shabby Chic are anything but shabby
Retro-items from the second-hand shop or mummy’s wardrobe are particularly coveted unique specimens that admirers know how to appreciate and take care of. For ugly stains or scratches, dull dry colours and cheap fake materials ensure that the cool leather jacket is turned into an optical nightmare.
As paradox as it might sound: the Shabby Style as celebrated by fashion icons such as Kate Moss requires, alongside courage and style, a particularly high degree of care.
Only he who, at the heart of his being, is an orderly type is able to afford the disorderly look. This is because a dirty leather jacket soon appears uncool – along with its wearer, whether masculine or feminine. A respectable used leather jacket is characterised by the fact that its surface is not dried out, scratched or stained.
Cleaning vintage leather jackets properly
After purchasing a vintage leather jacket the first thing it should be subjected to is dry-cleaning. What can be washed and brushed off will not be unnecessarily rubbed in during subsequent wet cleaning.
Brushes, cleaning stones or towels assist you in this. Should wet leather care be required, apply a cleansing foam with a cloth or sponge. Most cleansing foams are suitable for all types of materials. The milder they are the better. After cleaning you should, under all circumstances, allow your leather jacket to dry out properly!
If, after cleaning, dry patches are recognisable or should the leather make a dull impression, a nurturing cream that supplies the material with moisture can help. Leather, in the course of time and through being worn, loses nutrients which can be replenished in such a simple manner. The result is that the colour gains in depth once more and the leather becomes more supple.
Proper waterproofing also affords protection against water stains caused by rain or accidents involving drinks at parties. This causes wetness to be repelled and any dirt will remain on the surface and not penetrate deep into the pores.

Our feet are sensitive body parts – and yet we often ignore them. Who really enjoys talking about foot trouble? Seventy-five percent of all people suffer from foot discomfort, however. Regular foot care and wearing high-quality shoe inserts are two ways to prevent and alleviate pain or discomfort. Collonil’s insole collection is designed with your foot wellbeing in mind. You can find a wide range of inserts including summer and winter insoles as well as specially-designed insoles for shoes worn without socks. These small ergonomic helpers don’t only improve your shoes’ wearing comfort, but can also help you stay steady on your feet.
Summer and barefoot insoles
Warm summer temperatures often cause feet to get a bit sweaty. Odours aren’t the only unpleasant thing, however, warm, moist foot environs are more prone to getting fungal infections. Summer insoles are a good preventative trick since they cool your feet and absorb excess moisture.
If you live in slip-ons or sandals in the summertime and rarely wear socks, you might be interested in insoles made of absorbent cotton terry cloth. Fans of sandals, mules and pumps can look for extra thin adhesive insoles that prevent your foot from slipping or sliding around.
Winter insoles
Winter temperatures are often cause for cold feet – especially for women. Multi-layered insoles with a wool or fleece top layer and insulated inner layer can help keep the temperature inside your shoes or boots nice and warm. Of course, this could also lead to your feet sweating excessively. Thus look for insoles with an activated charcoal layer to absorb any unpleasant odours that may form.
More high-tech winter insoles include temperature-regulating technology. These insoles will absorb excess body heat from your feet and radiate it back when your body temperature drops.
Versatile, year-round insoles
Leather insoles can help improve the climate inside your shoes. They provide a comfortable base layer and absorb excess moisture. An additional activated charcoal layer can help prevent odours from getting out of hand and a latex foam layer will offer your foot a bit more cushion.
Orthotic insoles
If you spend a lot of time standing at work or at home, you should make sure your feet are getting enough support. Specially-designed orthopaedic insoles take the pressure off your ankles, ligaments and spine and can counteract stress injuries.
Air circulation in your shoe is essential
Regardless of which insoles you choose, it’s important that your feet are able to breathe in your footwear. That’s why all Collonil products are made of breathable fabrics like leather, 100% wool and cotton, lambskin and coconut fibres. Make sure to remove your insoles from your shoes after wear so they can dry, ideally every time. But remember: don’t place them on radiators or heaters!

On September 11th 2012 Collonil celebrated the laying of the foundation stone for a new logistics centre. This centre is being build on the historical company site in Mühlenbeck. The centre is planned to be finished by the end of the first quarter of the year. Today, COLLONIL celebrated the laying of the foundation stone with several regional guests. For Frank Becker, this centre is a very important project, because "with this project at the Mühlenbeck-location we meet our own high expectations as a responsible company in this region. Our decision in favour of Germany was not only based on economical factors. The choice of location also included social and ecological aspects", says Frank Becker, referring to the backgrounds of the building project. During the ceremony CEO Frank Becker equipped a document roll with symbolic items that represent the company´s history on the one hand and make a connection to the actual occasion. This time-capsule was then embedded in the foundation stone. The new COLLONIL branch means a lot to the district of Mühlenbeck. At least 30 to 60 jobs will be created. Mayor Smaldino-Stattaus is very happy with the "return of the lost child": " we think it´s wonderful that COLLONIL as a traditional company is settling again in Mühlenbeck. We feel strongly connected with COLLONIL."

Collonil Organic is a newly developed product series that largely dispenses with chemical substances. Bamboo Lotion removes dirt and provides leather and textiles with precious moisture. Natural bamboo extract prevents the material from losing moisture and protects it from drying out. It is suitable for smooth leather, nubuk and velours, as well as for combinations of textile materials. Directions for use: Keep the bottle in an upright position, spray the lotion from a distance of 20cm and distribute with a soft cloth. Dirt will detach from the material by itself. With nubuk and velours use a brush to remove the dirt and allow to dry. Roughen up if necessary.

The story of COLLONIL is a true Berlin story. The foundation of the company´s success was situated in two small rooms in the Köpenicker Straße. After the business had begun to flourish, all three founders – Karl Esslen and the Salzenbrodt-brothers – expanded the company and moved in to a location situated in the Schlesische Straße 12. They moved once again in 1921, this time to Mühlenbeck which was situated towards the eastern part of Berlin and about 5 kilometres away. After World War II, the Salzenbrodt-brothers decided to relocate to the western part of Berlin because economical success there was a lot more promising for creative business men like them. The Esslen-familiy did not follow the Salzenbrodt-brothers and so Collonil became a true family business which was transformed to be the Salzenbrodt GmbH & Co. KG. Because a rental agreement expired, the business had to move one last time in 1952. The head office of the company was then established in Wittenau, near Berlin, on a 14.000 m² factory site. Until today, this is where the company´s headquarters and the production facilities are situated. Collonil also operates COLLONIL WIEN, COLLONIL FRANCE and COLLONIL APS DENMARK. Although COLLONIL products are successfully distributed internationally today, COLLONIL attaches great importance to the fact that, even after 100 years of business, their products are "Made in Germany" – a feature that stands for the products´ highest quality standards and reliability. Comprehensive expertise, latest technologies and high quality raw materials are the features that make COLLONIL stand out. COLLONIL´s superior shoe and leather care is appreciated in more than 82 countries – that makes it an almost worldwide distribution. The export to eastern Europe in particular is growing rapidly, but also in Australia, Taiwan and the in the Arabic parts of the world there is an increased demand for COLLONIL products.

Autumn not only reminds us of colourful leaves but also of rain, puddles and mud. With rubber boots you can fully enjoy this beautiful season without having to worry about wet feet. They are not only absolutely water resistant but also long-lasting. However, they pick up dirt as well, just like any other shoe. Surface dirt can be removed with a brush or a cloth. For heavy dirt our LEATHER SOAP can be used. LEATHER SOAP not only cleans rubber boots but also provides a nice touch.
