Motorcycle gear has to withstand extreme strain. Alexander from the Kettenritzel motorcycle blog tested Collonil products on his jacket and boots to see if they stand up to the pressure.

                <![CDATA[
After the first signs of spring and my first hopeful ride a few weeks ago, the winter has returned. This gives me some time to take care of my gear before more tour-suitable weather returns. My bike has gotten its yearly service and new tires. I cleaned my helmet inside and out and got a new visor and pinlock to ensure good visibility.
But the thing I always neglect is my jacket, trousers and boots. Regular care is needed to keep both leather and textile gear functional and durable. At the latest, you can find out whether your boots are still waterproof during the next big rain storm.
While the cold weather persists outside, I’m inside making sure my gear (Revit Ignition 2 jacket, Revit Gear 2 trousers) and boots (Alpinestars Roam 2 boots) are ready for the upcoming season.
Collonil sent me some of their products to test out. So, I let my inner cleaner loose and got down to business.
Cleaning

My gear has both leather and textile components. The insect residue from last season is well dispersed and dried on both types of material. I used the ONE FOR ALL foam to give my jacket and trousers a good base clean. The advantage of this product is that it is suitable to use on all types of materials. You apply it with a sponge and it will take care of any major dirt or grime. The first application worked really well, so I only needed to apply it a second time to more stubborn spots and rub lightly with the sponge. ONE FOR ALL maintains your gear’s breathability, nourishes the material and gives it a first layer of water resistance.

I used 1909 LEATHER CREAM on the leather parts of my gear. This gives a deeper clean than the foam and refreshes the colour, but it’s only suitable for smooth leather. Even if you have relatively new gear, the black will look deeper after treatment with this leather cream.

After it worked so well with my Revit jacket, I took my much older and worn ICON Vigilante jacket and gave it the same treatment. This jacket also has mixed materials: the body is textile and the arms are leather. The colour refreshing effect was definitely noticeable on the arms.
Waterproofing
Once cleaning was taken care of, I sprayed all my gear with CARBON PRO waterproofing spray. I was able to get even coverage on my jacket, trousers and boots with several coats applied from about a 30 cm distance. Painting rules apply here: don’t get the surface too wet and let it dry between coats. Unsurprisingly, it looks like clearcoat after applying it to smooth leather, but that disappears once the material dries. In terms of volume, one CARBON PRO can was enough to give my gear three coats of waterproofing spray.

Care
Finally, in order to keep the leather soft and prevent it from drying out, I used 1909 LEATHER LOTION . I used the lotion on both sets of gear. The leather was noticeably softer afterwards. I also used it on my Alpinestar motorcycle boots and they were left with a nice smooth finish.

There is special polish for robust leather garments called CARE FOR LEATHER CLOTHING . This was perfect for my ICON Elsinore boots, especially because the gear shift and shin protectors are made of roughened leather. Normal shoe polish doesn’t really do the trick. Apply it generously, let it sit and after a light polish, you’ll be ready for your next ride.
This week I learned the hard way why regular leather care is so important. I was wearing my ICON Vigilante jacket in the rain and while the leather completely absorbed the products, it wasn’t completely saturated. After a while, rain slowly started soaking into the leather. Once I was back home, I treated the arms with the CARE FOR LEATHER CLOTHING cream, which they absorbed straight away.
The care programme took the greater part of an evening, but as I mentioned, I’d been neglecting regular upkeep. I wash my bike after every tour before putting it in the garage and I’ll do the same with my gear from now on. Dirt gone, products on and you’ll have more fun, longer – plus dry feet.
  About Alexander:

Alexander began his two-wheeler career with a number of small-framed Vespas that he used during his studies and later to navigate the streets of Hamburg and Berlin. A stately 300 GTS Super and a number of other bikes were eventually added to his collection. Collonil has accompanied adventurers on expeditions to the most remote corners of this Earth. Now, winter sport enthusiasts Steffi and Mario from the Alpin-Blog are going to test our line of outdoor products.

                <![CDATA[
We are passionate about mountaineering and spend a lot of time in nature with our daughter Lena Sophie (7 months old). Of course, we prefer to explore when the sun is shining, but we’ll still go out in poor weather if the temptation is too great. We live in the Alpine Rhine Valley – essentially in the middle of the Alps – and are on our skis practically every weekend during the winter.
It’s interesting because conditions can change so rapidly when you’re out there. It can be bitter cold at the start of the trip and then reach sweltering temperatures that are unbearable even in a t-shirt – and all that in one day! We carry large packs and work up quite a sweat when we’re carving a new trail. The next day, the same clothes have to be able to withstand snow and wind. Finding gear that is suitable for both strenuous exercise (keyword: breathable) and extreme weather is certainly a challenge. We really value high-functioning gear!
Modern textiles definitely take the cake when it comes to damp/wet/windy conditions – especially when they are well cared for. That’s why we were more than happy to give our outdoor gear a ‘fresh coat’ with Collonil’s ACTIVE products at the start of the 2017/18 winter season, which had unseasonably early and intense snowfall. We’d like to share our experiences with you here:
UNIVERSAL PROTECTOR
This waterproofing spray is easy to use and effective. We applied it to our clothes (hard and softshells) and our backpacks and let it soak in overnight. Ever since, rain and snow beads off our gear and the interiors stay dry.
We even brought the spray along with us in the car for emergencies. We also waterproofed the outside (!) of the blue softshell cover on our daughter’s hiking carrier (outside softshell, inside fleece). Now the cover stays dry in snow and light rain and we can be at ease during our adventures.
Pros: The spray lasts longer than wash-in waterproofing solutions. There’s no need for a washing machine so you can use it on the go. It can also be used for more targeted application.

OUTDOOR CLEANER
Imagine you’re sitting in front of your tent on a mild summer evening and serving up a spoonful of freshly made pasta when – whoops – the tomato sauce spills down the front of your expensive outdoor gear. Man! If you’re travelling with children, you know this story well...
OUTDOOR CLEANER is made for these types of mishaps. We tested it on a pair of fairly dirty yellow ski pants . The spots were from a trip on rough terrain where Mario slipped and fell on muddy ground. At home about a week later, I sprayed the dirty spots, added some water and wiped the area with a towel – voilá– the spots disappeared. The colour of the pants wasn’t affected at all, which is obviously important.
We liked the flexibility of using this product as well. It’s perfect for on the go when you don’t have access to a washing machine.

OUTDOOR SHOE DEO
Between you and me, the ‘scent’ inside of ski boots is a true test for relationships. Washing helps in the short run, but after five wears at most, things are back to their original state. Thankfully, versatile SHOE DEO offers some much appreciated relief in all types of shoes. You can ask your partner whether it’s needed ;-)
Environmentally-conscious Steffi was happy to see that the deodorant didn’t contain harmful propellants and Mario is delighted that he no longer has to leave his ski boots out to air in the damp, cold garage. Plus, it works with other active footwear like climbing shoes!

OUTDOOR ACTIVE COMBI SET
We’re all about simple handling. Wash-in products offer ease of use and long-lasting effects.
Make sure to read the tiny white tag (i.e., washing instructions) on your clothes before washing them. You can find a key to understanding the symbols online. Temperature, spinning and method of drying are all important points to take note of, especially since not following them may cause serious damage to your gear. As a rule, you should only wash outdoor wear when it’s truly necessary. Membranes caked with sweat just can’t function to their full potential.
OUTDOOR TEXTILE WASH is a special detergent developed for functional textiles that preserves the breathability of membranes. It’s great for softshells, hard shells, down and fleece. We noticed that it didn’t cause unattractive pilling on our fleeces which is a big positive. The best part? After a good wash, you no longer have to feel bad around your outdoor buddies;-)
We decided to give our pants and jackets an extra waterproofing treatment in the washing machine with WASH IN PROTECTOR . After the wash, you can quickly pop the items in the dryer to optimise the waterproofing affects. If you don’t have a dryer, you can carefully use an iron (with a layer in between). Caution: Some materials don’t do well with heat and can only be air dried (keyword: taped seams).
In our experience, this combination works wonders with outdoor jackets and ski pants. We even brought worn-out gear like an old yellow 2.5 layer jacket from Mountain Hardwear back to life using it. Now that the snow and rain beads and rolls off, Mario has started wearing the jacket again on ski tours. It’s extra important that water doesn’t soak into your outer layer in heavy snow. In fact, when you’re high up in the Alps, this function is absolutely necessary for survival – you have to make sure your body doesn’t freeze!

LEATHER & TEX LOTION
Every once and a while, we are out in winter weather without skis. In these instances we’re usually wearing snowshoes or mountain boots; for example, during evening sledge rides or if there isn’t enough snow for a proper ski tour. If your footwear absorbs snow, however, the fun is over pretty quickly. Wet feet are cold feet. If you’re only out for a little while, it’s okay, but it’s a definite no-go for longer adventures. In any case, it’s good to take care of your winter footwear because it helps keep the outer material (synthetic or genuine leather) soft. It’s kind of like shoe wellness.
A good product for this is LEATHER & TEX LOTION . You can apply it in about one minute and it seriously works wonders! We tested it on one of Steffi’s old trekking boots from the basement. The next day we went for a hike in soft snow up our local mountain. We treated the left shoe with the spray the night before, but not the right one. You can clearly see the results in the photo. Not surprisingly, her foot got cold pretty quickly. Afterwards, she treated the second boot with the lotion.☺

SUMMARY
Well-cared-for outdoor gear means more – and longer – fun out in nature. A fine Gore-tex Pro jacket is useless if it gets wet after a short rain shower. When it’s properly waterproofed, the water simply rolls off. If that isn’t the case, then it’s time for another treatment!
The Collonil Outdoor Active series is great for people like us who’d rather spend their time out in nature than in the laundry room. The products are uncomplicated and do what they claim to do.

Nina is always on the go, and usually on four wheels. She rides her skateboard to university, around town and at the skatepark in the evenings. She also plays basketball, holds down a part-time job in a burger bar and enjoys a good night out. In short: Nina is rarely at home, leaving her little time to fuss over taking care of her shoes and clothes.
Odour elimination made easy
In addition to her skateboard, there’s another accessory Nina won’t leave the house without: her favourite hat. The grey corduroy cap from DC Shoes was a birthday gift from her best friend. Nina rarely takes it off, yet somehow it still looks in decent shape. Inside is another story, however. Every time she wears it, the hat absorbs sweat and oil from her skin and inevitably builds a hefty stench. Nina wishes she could just throw her cap and leather sneakers into the wash, but it’s not that simple. Same goes for her sport bag that rapidly absorbs the smell of sweaty t-shirts and wet towels. No need to worry, however, now there’s an effective solution for fighting odours: BREEZE odour neutraliser. BREEZE refreshens hats, bags, shoes and jackets. It doesn’t just mask one scent with another, but rather contains an innovative active ingredient that bonds with odour-causing molecules, preventing the release of unpleasant smells. BREEZE works best with damp or sweaty articles as the active agent is moisture activated. The earlier you apply the fabric refresher, the better since BREEZE stops odour-causing bacteria from taking hold in the first place. Your clothes won’t be left reeking of perfume afterwards either. BREEZE leaves things smelling like fresh laundry. The compact spray canister fits easily into any bag and works right-side up and upside down; a practical feature for spraying shoes. Applying BREEZE only takes 30 seconds, making it the perfect solution for those of us like Nina who don’t have loads of time to devote to removing odours from our belongings.
Remove odours on the go
Since using BREEZE , Nina has stopped worrying whether her clothes are giving off bad odours. She’s much more relaxed and has learned that the spray not only works wonders against sweat, but also gets rid of cigarette smoke, greasy food smells and pet odours from her cat Mao. BREEZE takes care of business, just like Nina on her skateboard.

                <![CDATA[
Many of us dream of it: Taking a breather after graduation or a career break and setting out to explore the world, spending months or years hopping from Canada to LA, Hawaii, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Bali and Thailand, and more. Just you and as much as you can carry on your back. This was certainly a dream of mine and it finally became a reality around the time of my 30th birthday.
Of course, a world tour doesn’t happen spontaneously. My endless to-do list of preparations included planning my route, booking flights, sorting out accommodation, finding someone to rent my room and getting all the proper vaccines. This list kept me busy full-time for two months.
How to fit a full wardrobe into a backpack?
When it finally came time to pack my belongings, I began to panic. Not only because it meant it was time to say goodbye to friends, family and my bed for a long time, but also because I knew I’d have to radically reduce my wardrobe!
I was planning to be on the road for five months, travelling from a chilly autumn in Canada to tropical Bali during monsoon season. I obviously needed to pack wet and warm gear, but my pack couldn’t weigh more than 15 kg or I’d have difficulty carrying it. Without a doubt, the hardest part was choosing which shoes to bring.
Backpacking checklist: Which shoes should I bring?
I wanted to bring shoes that would be suited to all types of situations. I needed footwear that was warm and robust enough to withstand treks on rough terrain. I also needed something that looked decent so I could make appearances in the great metropoles of the world and possibly a few posh clubs. And I wanted something light, airy and easy to take care of for long walks on the beach. I found it very challenging to winnow down my choices.
But tough decisions had to be made. I ended up packing two pairs of sandals, one pair of sneakers and my lime green moccasins. Yes, that’s right: lime green, light colour, completely unpractical – but I love them! I hoped that bringing along CARBON COMPLETE , the all-round cleaner from Collonil, would help make sure they returned home in fair shape. The cleaning foam is meant to protect, clean and even waterproof your shoes. You can see and read for yourself how my moccasins withstood the adventures to come:

First stop: Shoes as fresh as Niagara Falls

Welcome to Canada. I made sure my favourite summer shoes were looking smart before my five-month trip. I treated them with Collonil’s CARBON PRO waterproofing spray to be on the safe side. Here we are posing together at Niagara Falls. Of course, they’re no longer the newest shoes on the block – they’ve already survived three summers in Germany – but they’re my favourite pair and so comfortable, perfect for city tours and day trips. Plus, I could even get away with wearing them in the evening to restaurants and clubs around the world.

Next stop: Chuck Norris doesn’t worry about dirt

They also pounded the pavement at Los Angeles’ Walk of Fame. I’m sure Chuck Norris doesn’t clean his shoes. The dirt wouldn’t dare go anywhere near them! The same could be said for my shoes after they are cleaned with CARBON COMPLETE . My moccasins were beaming in LA; the first four weeks of travel didn’t put a dent in them, and that’s despite their ‘unpractical’ light colour. Obviously, darker shoes are a bit better suited for long trips, but I love a good challenge!

Next stop: Hill climbing and deep clean Fiji-style

After a short stop on Hawaii, I landed in Fiji paradise. The endless empty beaches, stunning coral reefs and tropical flora certainly left an strong impression. However, I didn’t just laze away my days on the beach; I was somehow convinced to go hill climbing. Of course, we went at a nice and easy pace, since we were on ‘Fiji time’ as the locals like to describe their lifestyle. If I had known what awaited me and my moccasins, however, I would have left them to rest in my bungalow and opted for my sneakers. After an 800-metre climb in 1.5 hours on jungle paths and across rocky ledges, it became clear that the local guide wasn’t taking it easy on us. For the first time on this trip, my shoes were looking worse for wear.
But the walk was worth it. In the end, we had a fantastic view over the island where ‘Cast Away’ with Tom Hanks was filmed. My poor footwear reminded me of beat-up Wilson, Tom Hank’s volleyball companion in the film. Not to worry, however, back on the beach I gave them a thorough clean and took some time for deep relaxation in a hammock.

Next stop: In with the persnickety Hobbits

After their deep clean, my moccasins were once again ready to be seen in civilisation. Off we went to visit the tidy Hobbits in New Zealand. The furry-footed creatures don’t allow just anyone to enter into their tiny hobbit homes, but we made the cut! Following our foray in Hobbiton, I decide it was time to give my trusted footwear a well-deserved break. Wellies did the job during my time working on a farm.
While the first days of spring in New Zealand were still relatively chilly, summertime temperatures in Sydney called for my brand new flip flops. However, after a few hours of walking around the city on hot asphalt, the sandals were quite literally falling apart at the seams. I kept wearing them, but unfortunately paid the price: weeks later my feet were still covered in painful blisters. Take note: Test your shoes out at home, don’t travel with a new pair that you haven’t broken in yet!

Next stop: Asian surpris

Asia took me by surprise. Rubbish-covered beaches, dirty streets, hostels filled with dogs that snatch and chew your shoes at night – wow. But I found serenity, or ‘sabar’ as the locals call it, in Bali. There, peacefulness is a whole way of life. I’d learned by then that Collonil had my back and would get my sensitive moccasins back into shape. Both pairs of my flip flops had by then found their way into rubbish bins, but my moccasins were still going strong!

Last stop: Bangkok – shoes are shining again!

The cherry on top of it all was when shoeshine specialist Aon from Bangkok’s Vulture Shoeshine got his hands on my favourite pair of moccasins. He polished them till they looked new. Afterwards, we could both head home glowing and enjoy a few more summer days together in Germany, and maybe even another trip around the world!

What did I learn on the world tour?
A trip around the world opens new horizons and will certainly teach you a few lessons along the way. Remember to stay calm when something doesn’t go according to plan, learn to constantly adjust to new people and situations, go with the flow, be forgiving with yourself and others and don’t expect everything to go perfectly. Looking back, I acted and looked very German at the start of my trip. After five months without a haircut, wearing the same clothes and countless bumps and bruises, I’ve learned to be more at ease with my external appearance.
But there is one thing I’ll never learn to compromise with: my shoes. I was so happy that I brought CARBON COMPLETE with me on my travels. It lasted for exactly five months and was the easiest and lightest solution to keep my beloved moccasins, sneakers and leather purse clean and cared for. You really don’t need anything else to make a polished appearance as a well-travelled backpacker.

Mild summer evenings encourage barbecuing. Textile shoes in light colours are a popular component of summer outfits. The pleasure lasts until a splash of ketchup lands on them. In this video, Colloni insider Pascale once again demonstrates the power of our CARBON PRO high-tech sprays. With them, no trace of dirt remains even on white textile shoes after rinsing with clear water. This is hard to believe if you have not seen it with your own eyes.

Collonil Organic is a newly developed product series that largely dispenses with chemical substances. Bamboo Lotion removes dirt and provides leather and textiles with precious moisture. Natural bamboo extract prevents the material from losing moisture and protects it from drying out. It is suitable for smooth leather, nubuk and velours, as well as for combinations of textile materials. Directions for use: Keep the bottle in an upright position, spray the lotion from a distance of 20cm and distribute with a soft cloth. Dirt will detach from the material by itself. With nubuk and velours use a brush to remove the dirt and allow to dry. Roughen up if necessary.
